The New York Yankees will try to gain a split of a four-game road series with their archrivals when they face the Boston Red Sox at 1:10pm ET Sunday at Fenway Park.

The Yankees (51-46) edged the Red Sox 4-3 on Saturday after losing the first two games of the series. New York has won 10 of its last 15 games but trail the first-place Red Sox (60-39) by eight games in the American League East standings.

Boston’s four-game winning streak ended Saturday, but it is favored to bouce back Sunday.

Probable Pitchers

The Yankees will pitch Domingo German (4-5, 4.71) while the Red Sox will give the ball to left-hander Martin Perez (7-6, 4.16).

German will be making his second start after being temporarily moved to the bullpen before the All-Star break. He pitched three times in relief after missing a start because of root canal surgery.

In his return to the rotation Tuesday against the visiting Philadelphia Phillies, German pitched four innings and was not involved in the decision. He allowed two runs, three hits and three walks while striking out five.

German vs Perez

Domingo German
VS
Martin Perez
4-5 Record 7-6
4.71 ERA 4.16
4.29 xERA 5.19
1.24 WHIP 1.47
3.64 SO/W 2.47

German has not won since May 20, which was also the last of his five quality starts in 16 tries this season. He has lost his last three decisions.

On the road, German is 4-3 with a 4.57 ERA in nine games (seven starts). He has a 1-4 record with a 5.94 ERA in eight day games, including seven starts.

German has started twice against the Red Sox this season and pitched once in relief, going 0-1 and allowing five runs (four earned) in 10.2 innings. Career-wise, he is 2-2 with a 4.58 ERA in nine games (seven starts) versus Boston and 1-2 with a 6.00 ERA in five games (four starts) at Fenway Park.

Perez has won his last seven starts when he has pitched at least five innings. However, he has lasted 3.2 and four innings in his last two turns through the rotation, and both were losses.

Being the laundry cart man is always a little more amusing in good times.

In those two starts, Perez gave up six runs in 7.2 innings after winning his previous three decisions. He faced the Yankees in New York last Sunday and had a no-decision while surrendering three runs and five hits in four innings with five strikeouts and one walk.

Perez is 0-1 in two starts against the Yankees this season and has yielded six runs (three earned) in 7.2 innings. He has a 2-4 career record versus the Yankees with a 7.04 ERA in nine starts.

Of Perez’s 19 starts this season, just three have been quality ones. He is 3-4 with a 5.80 ERA in 11 home starts and 3-2 with a 3.45 ERA in six starts in the daytime.

LeMahieu Leads the Way

Yankees first baseman DJ LeMahieu has a 34-game on-base streak, the longest in the major leagues this season. He is hitting .290 during that span with six doubles, four home runs, 22 RBIs and 18 walks.

That is also the longest streak by a Yankees hitter since Derek Jeter’s 34-gamer in 2012.

LeMahieu is 6 for 15 (.400) off Perez with a double and a home run.

Second baseman Rougned Odor is hitting .309 in his last 17 games with four doubles, four homers and 13 RBIs. Shortstop Gleyber Torres in a on a seven-game hitting streak in which he is 7-for-22 (.318) with two doubles, three home runs and eight RBIs.

Catcher Gary Sanchez is questionable after sitting out Saturday’s game with mid-back spasms. Sanchez has three homers in his last seven games but is just 2-for-11 (.182) against Perez with five strikeouts.

Designated hitter/first baseman Chris Gittens is also questionable after rolling his ankle Saturday when he stepped on a bat.

Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts is 6-for-14 (.429) against German with two doubles and a home run.

However, German has been tough on third baseman Rafael Devers (2-for-15, six strikeouts) and designated hitter J.D. Martinez (1-for-12, six strikeouts).

Yankees vs Red Sox Pick

The Red Sox have won nine of 12 meetings with the Yankees this season and Saturday marked the first time in 2021 that Boston lost at home to New York.

Odor’s two-run double highlighted a four-run rally in the eighth inning Saturday for the Yankees after his two errors helped the Red Sox build a 3-0 lead. Torres added a go-ahead, bloop single for the Yankees.

Despite Perez’s poor track record against the Yankees, look for Boston to continue to own the Yankees – and German — while avenging Saturday’s late loss.

The Pick: Red Sox ML (-140)
