How Will The Layoff Impact Thiago Santos?

Thiago Santos has not fought since July of 2019 when he suffered a split decision loss to Jon Jones for the light heavyweight title. In the fight, he tore both knees and needed surgery, but he will now make his return against Glover Teixeira.

Santos & Teixeira Recent Fights

Santos
VS
Teixeira
Jon Jones, loss by split decision (title fight) Fight 1 Anthony Smith, win by TKO
Jan Blachowicz, win by TKO Fight 2 Nikita Krylov, win by split decision
Jimi Manuwa, win by KO Fight 3 Ion Cutelaba, win by submission
Eryk Anders, win by TKO Fight 4 Karl Roberson, win by TKO

This is a phenomenal matchup between two of the best light heavyweights in the world. Santos has had nothing but success since moving up to light heavyweight. Moreover, one judge and many media members actually thought he beat Jon Jones.

Glover Teixeira, meanwhile, has had a career resurgence as of late and if he wins here, the 41-year-old could earn another shot at UFC gold.

A big question entering this fight is how will the year and a half layoff impact Santos. It is tough to say at this point if the knee surgeries will impact his movement. Ultimately, I don’t think it will impact him that much as “Marreta” hasn’t been one that relied on his footwork so much as he does with his power.

Santos vs Teixeira Stats

Santos is no doubt the better striker while Teixeira is the better grappler. However, I don’t see Teixeira being able to take Marreta down, and eventually, Santos will be able to piece up the 41-year-old on the feet.

Although Glover Teixeira has shown he has a good chin, I expect Santos’ shots will wear on him. I think Santos will score the knockout in the third round similar to his fight with Jan Blachowicz.

Pick: Thiago Santos (-230)

Can Boser Continue His Rise Up The Heavyweight Ranks?

Tanner Boser is getting his biggest named opponent to date when he battles former UFC heavyweight champion, Andrei Arlovski. For Arlovski, if he can get past a rising contender in Boser, he would be back on the rise up the very shallow heavyweight division.

Arlovski & Boser Recent Fights

Arlovski
VS
Boser
Philipe Lins, win by decision Fight 1 Raphael Pessoa, win by TKO
Jairzinho Rozenstruik, loss by KO Fight 2 Philipe Lins, win by KO
Ben Rothwell, win by decision Fight 3 Ciryl Gane, loss by decision
Augusto Sakai, loss by split decision Fight 4 Daniel Spitz, win by decision

Although a knock on Arlovski has been his chin, I actually don’t think it is as bad as many say it is. However, I do like Boser to be able to piece up the former champion on the feet.

Boser is faster and throws more volume, while Arlovski has been slowing down. Ultimately, I do think Arlovski is durable enough to go all three rounds but likely lose all three.

Pick: Tanner Boser (-278)

Other UFC Vegas 13 Picks:

  1. Raoni Barcelos (-355): Barcelos is better everywhere and will likely finish this fight in the first or second round.
  2. Ian Heinisch (-106): This is the true definition of a pick’em fight. I think Heinisch is the better striker and has a wrestling background to be able to keep the fight standing and do enough to win a decision.
  3. Xiaonan Yan (-139): I actually think this line should be a lot higher. Yan is the real deal and will be able to outpoint Gadelha on the feet to win a decision.
