Brooklyn, Denver Look to Snap Losing Streaks

Brooklyn and Denver are in similar positions currently, both entering Sunday on losing streaks while attempting to hang onto their positions in the postseason picture.

With both teams coming off of losses on Friday night, the Nets losing streak is now up to seven straight while the Nuggets’ streak is up to three games in a row. The good news for Brooklyn is that it is 17-10 in road games, which is one of the top marks in the East. Denver, on the other hand, is 13-10 at home this year.

The Nets and Nuggets are also trying to further cement themselves as the sixth seeds in their respective conferences, both in danger of dropping in the standings. Brooklyn holds a half-game lead on the sixth seed in the East, while Denver has a one-game cushion in its position the West standings.

Despite their struggles, the Nets have been able to maintain their place in the NBA Championship odds.

Are Drama, Injuries Weighing on the Nets?

Drama has followed Brooklyn all season long, whether it be Kyrie Irving not being able to play in home games due to being unvaccinated or the recent news of James Harden potentially looking to leave the Nets this offseason if the team doesn’t trade him before then.

On top of that off-the-court drama, injuries have also begun to weigh on Brooklyn on the court. On Friday, the Nets were without most of their star power, having Harden (hamstring), Kevin Durant (knee), LaMarcus Aldridge (ankle) and Joe Harris (ankle) all miss the game in Utah.

If Brooklyn ultimately wants to make a run in the playoffs this season, it will obviously have to shore up the drama surrounding the team while also focusing on getting everyone back and healthy to make that run.

Nuggets Late-Game Struggles

Part of the struggles for Denver as of late has been late in games, especially in the fourth quarter. In Friday’s loss to New Orleans, those late-game woes were once again an issue and played a large role into the Nuggets falling for a third straight game.

The late-game struggles haven’t hurt Nikola Jokic’s NBA MVP odds, however.

Denver has been middle of the NBA in defense this season, ranking 17th in the league in defensive rating (110.5). In its last three games, all of which resulted in defeat, the defensive issues have excelled and the latest example was on Friday when the Nuggets allowed the Pelicans to outscore them 31-23 to come from behind and take the game.

Over the last three games, Denver has given up 29 points per game in the fourth quarter alone, also allowing opposing offenses to shoot 55.4 percent from the field in the final frame (eighth-highest mark in the NBA).

The Nuggets will have to shore things up defensively starting on Sunday, especially if they want to end a losing streak against a Nets team that is trying to do the same.

Nets vs Nuggets Prediction

If both teams were at full strength in this game, Brooklyn would likely be able to come into Denver and take this game especially with Irving being able to take the floor in an away contest. Even though Irving will be playing on Sunday, the Nets are still going to be banged up with injuries which will likely play a large factor.

With that said, expect Denver to be the team that ends its losing streak at home while extending Brooklyn’s to eight straight. For the best bet of the night, go with the Nuggets being five-point underdogs following the prediction of them coming out with a victory.

The Pick: Denver +5 (-110)
