The Chicago Bulls are just trying to keep afloat for a play-in berth while the wait for Zach LaVine to return to the lineup.

They’re in New York Wednesday, battling a Knicks team looking to bounce back after taking their first L in 10 games.

The 11th-place Bulls are a game behind the surging Washington Wizards for 10th and the final play-in spot, and come into this one as 5-point underdogs to the Knicks, who sit alone in fourth in the East.

Bulls Frontcourt Does Work

Who knows where the Bulls would be right now if they didn’t make a deal for Nikola Vucevic at the trade deadline. The big man has been a source of stability, particularly with LaVine out of the lineup due to health and safety protocols.

Last game out against Miami, he put up 24 points and 11 boards, as the Bulls avoided a sweep in their mini-set with the Heat.

Minus LaVine, Vucevic has helped guide the Bulls to a 4-3 mark over seven games, where he’s averaging 22.1 points, 10.9 rebounds and hitting a hefty 44.7% from three-point range.

Another deadline pickup, Daniel Theis, also picked a good time to deliver his first 20+ point game for the Bulls. He scored 23 points and pulled down 12 rebounds, his second double-double with Chicago.

Coby White continued his strong play of late as well, with 17 points, five rebounds and six assists against Miami. He’s averaged 19.1 points and 6.1 assists on 46.2% shooting in LaVine’s absence.

Knicks in the Mix

Despite seeing their 9-game win streak come to an end, the Knicks were in it against one of the NBA’s elite in their 118-110 loss to the Suns.

New York built up a 15-point lead in the second quarter, but slowly watched it chip away, as their defense wasn’t able to dig in for their usual stops. Phoenix was able to rattle off 62 second half points, and shot 9-for-18 from three-point range to come away with the win.

Julius Randle got a glimpse of what top defenses are going to do to force him from dominating a game. The Suns used smaller, more athletic defenders to neutralize the Knicks’ all-star (primarily Torrey Craig), but the gameplan was to key in on stopping the catalyst of the offense.

Randle finished with 18 points on 6-for-17 shooting from the field, adding six rebounds and four assists. In his previous four starts, he had gone for 30+ in all four, cracking the 40-point plateau twice. RJ Barrett couldn’t get it cooking either, finishing with 17 points on 7-for-18 from the field.

One bright spot was Derrick Rose, who led the team in scoring with 22 points, six rebound and six assists off the bench.
