February starts with a loaded slate of NBA games. The Lakers, Nuggets, Mavericks, Suns, Bucks and Heat are all set to play on February 1st. Jimmy Butler is due for his second game since his return from health and safety protocols, while Nikola Jokic will look to build on an immense Sunday performance as Denver faces the Pistons.

Damian Lillard and the depleted Blazers take on Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Milwaukee Bucks. The struggling Mavs will duel with the Phoenix Suns.

Hield From Deep

The Pelicans allow the most three-pointers in the NBA. Opponents are shooting over 38% from deep against New Orleans. Buddy Hield ranks fourth in the league in three-point attempts per game.

For a non-star to have his three-pointers made line at 4.5 is eye-catching, but it’s a fair place to start with Hield. He’s made over 4.5 in each of his last three games, and averages 4.1 makes from deep per contest. Combine that with the Pelicans giving up so many long ball opportunities, and betting Hield to make five or more threes suddenly seems a relatively reasonable proposition.

New Orleans doesn’t restrict opponents to threes above the break, either. They rank 29th in the NBA in frequency of opponent corner threes. Hield is in the 90th percentile among wings at hitting corner threes. Even in the Kings’ unimpressive shot profile, they generate a decent amount of corner three-point attempts, ranking 14th in the NBA in that category.

The Rockets shot 43.5% from three in the Pelicans’ last game. Milwaukee was at 37.1% the game before. New Orleans’ troubles defending the three ball are a season-long issue – Hield will be the main beneficiary on Monday. It’s made for a big night from the former sixth overall pick.

Grant Proves a Point

Offered the same money by Denver as he was by Detroit, Jerami Grant has a point to prove on Monday. Grant is an early candidate for Most Improved Player, and could earn his first All-Star selection. The former second round pick is averaging career-highs across the board – his usage has surged from 18% on the Nuggets in 2019-20 to 26% on Detroit in 2020-21.

Facing a defense which ranks 21st in the NBA, Grant has yet another opportunity to put up big numbers as he returns to Colorado.

The Nuggets and Pistons both rank in the bottom 10 in pace. While that doesn’t suggest a high-scoring game, these are two subpar defensive teams, and the Nuggets have limited defensive options to throw at Grant.

Grant has hit a cold patch, scoring under 21.5 in four of his last six, which could put off some bettors. Even with this run, though, the former Nugget has gone over 21.5 in 15 of Detroit’s 20 games. Having taken 19 or more shots in 11 of 14 games between December 28th and January 23rd, Grant has averaged 12 shots per contest over his last four games.

Defenses are more wary of him at this point, of course, but this is also a case of Grant looking to move the ball a bit more. We can be sure he will look for his own shot as he faces his former team – this is a game made for Grant to get up 20 shots.

His efficiency hasn’t dropped off massively in his quiet performances of late. Grant is a great bet to hit the over against a fatigued Denver team on the second night of a back-to-back.
