Kyrie Gets Going

Kyrie Irving has not sacrificed shots with the arrival of James Harden. With no Kevin Durant, Irving will have an even bigger role against the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday. The last time Irving played with just one of his co-stars, he got up 20 shots in the loss to the Wizards. That figure is marginally above his season average of 19.7 field goal attempts per game, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him get up 25+ shots against Detroit.

Detroit is 21st in defensive rating. Their perimeter options to throw at Irving are limited. Jerami Grant can take on the James Harden assignment, but how do they guard Irving?

Irving registered just 15 points in the loss to Toronto. Those circumstances are incomparable to this game. The Raptors have two of the best defensive guards in the NBA in Fred VanVleet and Kyle Lowry. It’s optimistic to imagine Delon Wright can keep Irving as quiet, and even if he does, Irving is still going to rack up the points through sheer volume. With Kevin Durant coming and going, Irving managed just 12 field goal attempts against Toronto. That number will be much higher on Tuesday.

This feels like exactly the sort of game Irving could get going in. He’s scored 27 or more on seven occasions already this season, and has gone for 37 or more four times. It wouldn’t be a surprise if he hit this over inside three quarters.

  • Pick: Kyrie Irving over 26.5 points (-110)

Trail Blazers Have No Answer for Vucevic

The 25.5 points line might seem high for Nikola Vucevic. He’s averaging just over 23 per contest on the season, and both Portland and Orlando rank in the bottom half of the league in pace. The surface level numbers don’t suggest a big night from the Magic center is a great bet, but there’s more to this one.

Portland is third-worst in defensive rating over their last ten. Enes Kanter, who will be matched up with Vucevic on the majority of possessions, ranks 63rd among centers in ESPN’s defensive real plus-minus. With so many injuries on this Magic roster, Vucevic is averaging almost 20 shot attempts per game. Despite some cold shooting in recent games, he has gone over 25.5 points in five of his last 12 games, including a massive 43-point outing just two games ago.

YouTube video

Vucevic is taking over six threes per game and hitting over 42%. Kanter is not going to guard him out there – Portland will either switch a smaller player onto the All-Star center or they will just let him shoot. Vucevic is too good a shooter to leave him open. Portland has been a woeful defensive team of late, and Kanter is responsible for a lot of that.

Orlando aren’t exactly loaded with ball handling, but they will be able to get Vucevic in position to get good looks.

Joel Embiid, Julius Randle and Christian Wood have all enjoyed productive nights against the Blazers recently. Vucevic should be the latest name added to that list.

  • Pick: Nikola Vucevic over 25.5 points (-118)
