The Oklahoma City Thunder and Miami Heat are both comfortable in their mid-seeding spots. In a normal season, home advantage would be up for grabs in the final games. It is different this year – unless a team is searching for a specific first-round matchup, these last seeding games are relatively insignificant.

Both clubs have seen players go in and out thus far. Billy Donovan was without three starters for the Thunder’s last game. Kendrick Nunn missed Miami’s last two – Goran Dragic and Jimmy Butler have also missed time, though all three should be available for Wednesday’s matchup with Oklahoma City.

Thunder Haunted By Lack of Depth

Donovan has worked wonders this year. Chris Paul deserves a spot on one of the All-NBA teams. The Thunder are a brilliant story, but the nature of their roster makes them vulnerable to absences. Depth has been an issue all year long, and with key players sitting out, they have lost two of their last three heavily to the Memphis Grizzlies and Phoenix Suns.

At the time of writing, it’s unknown which of Oklahoma City’s starters will play. Steven Adams, Danilo Gallinari and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander should all be available, but Donovan could look to give some of them further rest. Paul has missed one game all season, and is expected to play, but will likely feature for fewer minutes than he has done for most of the season.

Donovan could view this game as an opportunity to experiment further, testing out players down the bench ahead of the playoffs. As it stands, they will matchup with the Rockets in the first round, which is a tantalizing prospect for neutrals. Dropping to sixth and being more likely to play Denver is surely appealing to OKC, though.

Butler Becomes Non-Shooter

Teams shoot 34% from three against the Thunder, a record good for third in the NBA. The Heat are the best three-point shooting team in the league, but their spacing is not always ideal. Butler has had a terrible year shooting the ball and is turning down open looks from the perimeter. Their other star, Bam Adebayo, is yet to develop three-point range.

Duncan Robinson might be the best shooter in the bubble. Tyler Herro hits them at a good rate. In their best lineups, though, a lot of responsibility falls to Jae Crowder to be efficient from deep. Crowder can be an up-and-down shooter.

Nunn has struggled from the field in Orlando, and Andre Iguodala, who will get considerable minutes from the bench, is not a good enough shooter to stretch defenses.

The concern for Miami centers around Butler. He is their main offensive force, he’s developed as a playmaker and gets to the line at will, but his shooting woes limit the line-up options for Erik Spoelstra. Against a Thunder team that contests threes well, and has Adams protecting the rim, Miami’s offense could find it tricky.

Thunder to Win

Although Dennis Schroeder remains unavailable, the Thunder should be close to full strength for this one. With Gilgeous-Alexander and Paul reunited in the backcourt, the Heat’s guard defense will be tested.

These are two well-matched teams, and would be a great playoff duel. This will not have quite that intensity, but if Butler and Paul are involved, it is going to be competitive regardless of the circumstances. Having a refreshed Gilgeous-Alexander, Adams and Gallinari makes the Thunder the best bet.

Pick: Oklahoma City Thunder +1.5 (-110)
