Many of the NBA’s biggest stars are playing on Monday night as Kevin Durant, James Harden, Steph Curry and Joel Embiid are all in action. The Toronto Raptors and Indiana Pacers matchup on the second night of a back-to-back, while LeBron James faces his former team in the overachieving Cleveland Cavaliers.

Two early contenders for MVP go head-to-head, too. Nikola Jokic and Luka Doncic are hoping to close the gap to the West’s top teams – both players have put up massive numbers so far this season.

Bam Gets Going

There are a lot of adjectives for the Nets’ defense since putting their big three together. Few of them are positive.

Brooklyn gave up 124 to a weakened Heat team on Saturday, and they had no answer for the Cavaliers, as they lost consecutive games to one of the worst offenses in the NBA. The Heat only rank 21st on that end of the floor, and they are 29th in turnovers.

Yet they pushed the Nets all the way at the weekend. Key to that was Bam Adebayo, who had a career-night with 41 points, nine dimes, 14 free throw attempts and just one turnover. Adebayo continues to develop his offensive game, and the Nets had no answer for him. His 20 field goal attempts was the most in the game.

With Tyler Herro and Jimmy Butler still absent for Monday’s matchup with the same opponents, Adebayo’s usage should be just as high.

YouTube video

While hitting the 40-point mark is unlikely, the Nets’ personnel and general disinterest in defense points towards another strong offensive game from the Heat. Brooklyn has no obvious defensive option to cope with Adebayo’s mix of strength, size and mobility. He’s a threat to earn some putbacks and extra possessions on the offensive glass, too.

Adebayo to hit his points over is our pick, though plenty will be tempted by his 37.5 line on points, rebounds and assists.

  • Pick: Bam Adebayo over 21.5 points (+100)

SGA Goes Off

The Blazers defense is a mess. Even the Thunder’s league-worst offense is going to score easily against a Portland team which is giving significant minutes to Carmelo Anthony and Enes Kanter. With both OKC and Portland on the second night of back-to-backs, the defensive standards could be lower still. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has youth on his side, though, and is coming off an efficient 23-point game against the Clippers.

YouTube video

Gilgeous-Alexander scored 17 in his last game on the second night of a back-to-back. He scored 23 in the same circumstances earlier in the season, going eight-for-10 from the field against the Magic. An increased usage (26.2% up from 23.7% last season) has seen the former Kentucky guard average career highs across the board, but he’s doing so more efficiently, too. His 61.3% true scoring is a marked improvement on his first two seasons in the league.

Portland’s defense allows opponents to get to the rim. Gilgeous-Alexander is in the 95th percentile in proportion of shots at the rim of players classified as ‘points’ by Cleaning The Glass. He attacks relentlessly and scores efficiently when he gets there – only Eric Bledsoe and De’Aaron Fox have a higher field goal percentage at the rim of players in that category on a reasonable volume. Gilgeous-Alexander will go at Kanter over and over.

In what is likely a high-scoring game, Gilgeous-Alexander to go over 21.5 points is an easy bet.

  • Pick: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander over 21.5 points (-116)
