Odds taken on Jan 29 from FanDuel

Fournier Keeps Going

Evan Fournier has scored 19 or more in each of his last five games. The Clippers are without Kawhi Leonard and Paul George (health and safety protocols) as well as Patrick Beverley (knee). Their perimeter defense is drastically weakened. In the handful of games before his eight-game absence, Fournier never took more than 13 shots. He’s averaging 16 attempts since his return, including over eight per contest from behind the arc – the veteran guard is up to almost 40% from deep on the season.

With Markelle Fultz out for the year, Fournier has hit a career-high in usage. Aaron Gordon has struggled with more ball handling responsibility – Fournier and Cole Anthony are their primary creators on the outside. Facing a Clippers defense which has yet to live up to expectations this season and is without their three best defensive players, Fournier should have opportunities aplenty to score. Even with the ball in his hands more, Fournier’s attitude is always to score first.

The Clippers’ guards for Friday’s game are all vulnerable defensively. Luke Kennard, Lou Williams and Reggie Jackson are going to struggle to keep Fournier quiet.

While this might be a low-scoring game (both teams are in the bottom 10 in pace), recent games suggest Fournier will get lots of shots up. His points over is a very good bet at 18.5.

  • Pick: Evan Fournier over 18.5 points (-104)

SGA’s Easy Night

The Nets are 25th in defensive rating since James Harden’s debut. The Harden and Kyrie Irving backcourt has been as expected on the defensive end. Collin Sexton, Cedi Osman, Terrence Ross, Kendrick Nunn and Cam Reddish have enjoyed efficient nights against Brooklyn over that span.

On Friday, the Nets face the Thunder and one of the best young guards in the NBA in Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Having taken over the offense after Chris Paul and Dennis Schroder were traded, the former Clipper has flourished. He’s scored 22 or more in nine of his 17 games, and has gone past 30 on three occasions. Gilgeous-Alexander is at a career-high 37.8% from three, and he ranks in the 95th percentile in percentage of his shots at the rim.

Brooklyn is 29th in the league in opponent points in the paint since the Harden trade. They have been unable to stop dribble penetration, and they are lacking a rim protector with Jarrett Allen playing in Cleveland. Gilgeous-Alexander has been attacking the cup more than ever – he’s at a career-high in 6.2 free throw attempts per game, good for 15th in the league.

These are two of the quickest teams in the league. Both rank in the top nine in pace, Oklahoma City’s offensive rating might not point towards a high-scoring game, but this Nets defense is perfect for Gilgeous-Alexander to put up big numbers. His points over is great value.

  • Pick: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander over 21.5 points (-110)
