Despite dropping their third straight, the Utah Jazz (12-9, 6-7 away) have been surprising giant killers all season.

The Phoenix Suns (12-6, 10-1 home), a team the Jazz knocked off just seven days ago, will get another crack at them Saturday night.

Utah is a scorching 5-0 against the spread in their last five games vs teams with a winning percentage higher than .600.

Phoenix, meanwhile, will look to continue crushing at home, where they are 10-1, the only team in the West with double-digit home wins.

Both teams will be playing on the second night of a back-to-back.

Utah Betting Outlook

After a blistering start, winning 10 of their first 13, the Jazz, Utah has come back to earth, having lost six of their last eight.

That’s more in line with what was expected of a team that lost their two best players in the offseason, and looked poised for a rebuild.

Friday’s loss was a 129-118 setback at the hands of the Golden State Warriors, dropping the Jazz one game under .500 on the road this season.

Lauri Markkanen led the way with 24 points and six rebounds, while Jordan Clarkson finished with 21 points and 10 assists. Kelly Olynyk also had 21 points and four boards.

A top-10 3-point shooting team, Utah was ice cold in ‘Frisco, hitting on just 11-for-45 from distance, a paltry 24.4%. Conversely, part of the Jazz’s success has been their three-point defense, limiting teams to 33.3% from the deep, the fifth-best mark in the league.

GState obliterated that stat, drilling 20-for-45 (44.4%), outscoring the Jazz by 27 with the money ball.

Phoenix Betting Outlook

The West-leading Suns did just enough to get by the Detroit Pistons Friday night.

Deandre Ayton led the way for them, scoring 28 points and 12 rebounds in a tidy 30 minutes of work. Devin Booker was the only other Sun to hit the 20-point plateau, dropping 21, to go along with seven rebounds and five assists, as the Suns maintained their lead atop the Western Conference.

The Suns, who rank fifth in the NBA in three-point shooting at 37.7%, struggled Friday, going just 7-for-29 from distance, a 24.1% clip.

Their defense, however, showed up again, holding Detroit to 42.4% shooting for the game and 102 points. They’re fifth in scoring defense, holding teams to 107.4 points per game.

Phoenix did it again without all-star Chris Paul, who missed his eighth straight game with a heel injury. His status is still uncertain for Saturday.

The Suns have gone 5-3 in his absence. His starting spot has been filled by Cam Payne and he’s been great in relief, posting another solid game of 16 points and 10 assists against the Pistons.

Jazz vs Suns Prediction

This is the second of three meetings this season, the Jazz taking the first one at home in a wild 134-133 win. Markkanen posted a career-high 38 points.

Hard to believe defense mattered in that one, but Utah got stops in the final frame, holding Phoenix to 10-for-27 shooting to pull out the win. Booker, who had been bonkers through three quarters with 45, scored just four points in that final frame.

The Suns have been strong on back-to-backs, going 5-0 ATS in their last five such scenarios, which includes a 1-0 mark this year. The Jazz aren’t slouches either, going 3-2 ATS on zero days rest.

Is Utah ready to sink back down the West ladder? In their last six losses the margin of defeat has been at least seven points, with the last two by double digits. And yet, even with Phoenix’s +12.2 point differential at home, I think the Jazz can hang, even if the Suns win.

Pick:

  • Jazz +7 (-110); 1 unit to win 0.91 units
  • NBA Betting Record: 11-7 ATS, 1-0 ML, 2-2 o/u; 0-1 parlays; +3.44 units
