The stars will be shining Saturday night for all to see when Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks take on Kyrie Irving, James Harden and the Brooklyn Nets on ABC (8:30pm ET).

Even with Kevin Durant shelved with a hamstring injury, the Nets are still rolling through the league. They won their eighth straight in a laugher over the Orlando Magic on Thursday.

This series has been a toss up recently, with both teams winning three of the last six meetings. It was Dallas that took the last one 123-111 on January 2, 2020. The latest odds are showing the Nets as three-point favorites in this matchup.

The Mavericks are missing one of their stars as well in Kristaps Porzingis, but he could return for this one. They could use a spark after getting manhandled on national television by the Philadelphia 76ers 111-97 on Thursday.

Dallas Needs to Step Up

Porzingis has not played since February 14th but he practiced Friday and is said to be feeling better. The Mavericks haven’t exactly fallen apart without him but his presence in the lineup would be a welcome sight at this point. They could have used him o Thursday night in the City of Brotherly Love.

Against the 76ers, the Mavericks tried to counter Joel Embiid by starting everyone’s favorite seven-footer, Boban Marjanovic. The strategy seemed to work, at least early on with Dallas trailing 23-22 after a quarter. Things went downhill quickly, as the 76ers took the second quarter 36-21 and never looked back. Doncic led the Mavericks in scoring with 19 points in an underwhelming performance.

Nets Rolling

The Brooklyn Nets just keep winning. The last time they lost was to the Detroit Pistons on February 9th. Good teams, bad teams, no matter who they play, they are beating them. They were at it again Thursday night when they smoked the Orlando Magic 129-92 behind Kyrie Irving’s wizardry.

Irving’s services were only needed for 30 minutes but that was more than enough time to put on a show. He led the Nets in scoring and assists with 27 points and nine dimes to go along with five rebounds. Not to be outshined, James Harden also joined Irving in the 20-point club with 20 on the nose.

Best Betting Angle

Whether or not Porzingis plays will obviously have an impact on this one but not for reasons bettors may think. While he is a gifted offensive player, one area of his game that is lacking is defense. In the last three games, all without Porzingis, Dallas  has the second-ranked defense in the association in terms of efficiency. On the season, they are 26th in the metric. Getting him back may not be great for tonight’s matchup.

It’s no secret the Nets can put points on the board as they have the most efficient offense in the NBA. What’s been different recently is their work on defense. Over the last three games, they are the fifth-most efficient defense in the NBA. No matter if the Mavericks get Porzingis back tonight, it likely won’t change the outcome. This could end up being a beatdown either way.

The pick: Brooklyn Nets -3 (-110)
