Another day, another crucial matchup in the rugged Western Conference.

On Tuesday, the Dallas Mavericks head into the Chase Center to take on the Golden State Warriors but plenty of question marks abound as many of their key players are questionable.

Dallas is simultaneously trying to chase down the Lakers for fifth spot, while fending off Portland and Memphis for their six-spot and guaranteed playoff berth.

Golden State’s recent run has them in 10th and in a play-in spot, and their recent 7-2 run has them four games clear of any outsiders. Still, they’re a home underdog in this one, despite the Mavs stepping in on a second half of a back-to-back.

Steph vs Everyone

Seems like Steph Curry’s off-game three games ago against the Wizards was merely a blip on one of the truly great month-long rides we’ve seen in the NBA. After potting just 18 points on 7-for25 shooting against Washington, Curry rebounded with a monster 32-point, 8-assist performance to bury the Nuggets, before dropping 37 points and seven assists in a 117-113 win over the Kings last time out.

Curry drilled seven more three-balls against SacTo, giving him an NBA record 85 triples in a calendar month, besting the mark of 82 by James Harden in November 2019, and he still has two more games to pad that record.

While he’s been shredding April, averaging 38.1 points a game on 47.2% shooting from distance on almost 14 attempts a game, it’s the defensive side of the Warriors that’s helped make his efforts count. Steph’s clutch there, too.

During this 7-2 run, the Dubs have limited teams to 107.7 points per game, good for seventh-best in the NBA. They also rank second in both field goal (44.3%) and three-point (32.9%) shooting defense.

While Draymond Green is getting much of the other hype for his impressive assist numbers, the Warriors have been getting a nice contribution from Kelly Oubre Jr, who’s added pep in that bench unit. He’s averaged better than 22 points a game over his last three games, and the Warriors are 3-1 since Oubre returned to the lineup from injury.

Mavericks Mash Unit

Dallas had  been on a nice three-win run before crashing 113-106 against the Kings Monday night. Luka Doncic was in the lineup despite an elbow bruise suffered against the Lakers. Maxi Kleber, fighting a bad back, was also able to go.

The same couldn’t be said for starters Kristaps Porzingis (ankle), Josh Richardson (hamstring) and reserve JJ Redick (heel). With zero days off between now and the Dubs, we likely won’t know how Rick Carlisle’s bingo card will look until near tip-off.

Even with Sacramento missing DeAaron Fox, they jumped on Dallas early, building a 20-3 lead, forcing the Mavs to play catchup all game. Doncic led the way with 24 points, seven rebounds and eight assists. Trey Burke and Tim Hardaway JR had 19 apiece.

The Mavs were coming off a mini-sweep of the LeBron-less Lakers which had pulled them 1.5 games of the 5-spot before Monday’s setback. Doncic had 18 points, 13 assist and eight rebounds in a 108-93 clubbing in the second game. He was helped by fill-in starter Josh Powell, who went 11-for-12 from the field and had 25 points and nine rebounds.

They opened the set with a 115-110 win. Doncic paced the attack that night with 30 points, nine rebounds and eight assists.

What’s the Best Bet?

It was all fireworks the last time these two met: Doncic put up 42 in a 134-32 win, as the Mavericks withstood a 57-point onslaught from Curry in his second-highest scoring game this season.

Expect the fresher Warriors to bring the juice as they look for their eighth win in 10 games. They’re also 4-1 against the spread in their last five vs teams with winning records. Dallas is just 5-7 in the second half of a back-to-back and average only 107.6 points in those games.

A win against Sacramento would have made it a lot easier for Carlisle to let his ailing players rest another night. Even if Dallas does get more guys back, expect more Curry fireworks and a Dubs win.
