Thursday’s NBA slate gets underway at 7:10pm ET with the Dallas Mavericks in the capital to face the Washington Wizards. Luka Doncic is among the leading contenders in NBA MVP odds, but Dallas is coming off a loss to Orlando on Wednesday night. The slow-starting Philadelphia 76ers, led by Joel Embiid, are in Atlanta to face the star backcourt of Trae Young and Dejounte Murray.

The depleted Charlotte Hornets are on the road against the Miami Heat, with Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo available to play. Portland and New Orleans close out the evening’s action as Dame Lillard and Zion Williamson go head-to-head.

Pick #1: Tyrese Maxey Over 23.5 Points

Philadelphia is 1.5-point underdogs for their game against the Atlanta Hawks. James Harden’s injury plays a role in that point spread, but the Hawks are on the second night of a back-to-back after a disappointing loss to the Utah Jazz on Wednesday.

Atlanta has an ideal option to guard Tyrese Maxey in the shape of Dejounte Murray. Fatigue is a factor here, though, with the Sixers last playing on November 7th. Without Harden, Maxey is running the offense, and has taken on a much greater role after being marginalized in the opening games. He is averaging 22.3 field goals per game over the last four, good for fifth in the NBA across that period.

Maxey’s first step means he can get to the rim at will. Atlanta is fourth-worst in the rate of opponent shots in the restricted area, and while they have the interior presence to force a low percentage on those looks, Maxey is a smart and athletic finisher. He also possesses an exceptional floater, which is an asset when the Hawks are in drop coverage.

The Dallas native wasn’t at his best against Charlotte, but he has gone over this line in three of the last four and five of his last seven. There’s definitely value here.

Pick: Tyrese Maxey over 23.5 points (-113)

Pick #2: Kyle Kuzma Over 24.5 Points & Rebounds

Dallas is favored by 3.5 points over Washington on Thursday night despite the Wizards having homecourt and a rest advantage. COVID-19 protocols have sidelined Bradley Beal of late, leaving a lot of extra shots to be shared around the Wizards offense. One beneficiary is Kyle Kuzma, who scored 20 and grabbed six rebounds against Charlotte last time out.

Kuzma faces a Dallas team which ranks in the bottom 10 in rebounding percentage. Among forwards, he is in the 95th percentile in defensive rebounding rate, and has a tendency to sneak in for offensive boards on occasion.

The former Laker is well-above average in the share of his shots from mid-range, an area where the Mavericks are happy to concede field goal attempts (only three teams allow more short-mid range shots than the Mavs). Kuzma is also above average among forwards in shots at the rim in both quantity and efficiency — Dallas is subpar at defending the basket.

This line might seem on the high side given Kuzma’s production this season, but the circumstances of this game and the opponent indicate he can put some big numbers again.

Pick: Kyle Kuzma over 24.5 points and rebounds (-125)
