The Indiana Pacers will hope for better health when they visit the rebuilding Orlando Magic at 7pm Friday at Amway Arena.

The Pacers were without three starters in their 141-137 victory over the visiting Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday as two-point underdogs. Malcolm Brodgon (hip), Domantas Sabonis (ankle) and Myles Turner (always) all sat for Indiana (23-27), which is in ninth place in the Eastern Conference.

The Magic (17-34) have lost three games in a row and 16 of their last 20, including dropping a 131-116 decision to the Washington Wizards on Wednesday at home as four-point underdogs. Orlando is 2-5 since trading lineup fixtures Nikola Vucevic, Evan Fournier and Aaron Gordon on March 25.

Pacers Enjoy Double Holiday

Brothers Aaron and Justin Holliday stepped up their games for the banged-up Pacers on Wednesday as they combined for 43 points and nine three-point field goals.

Aaron Holiday scored a season-high 22 points in 22:13 off the bench, shooting 6-of-8 from the field and draining all four attempts from beyond the arc. He also sealed the victory by making two free throws with 8.3 seconds left.

Justin Holiday’s 21 points were his second-highest total of the season and matched his output from the three previous games combined. He knocked down five threes.

T.J. McConnell matched season highs with 19 points and 15 assists. He was 9-of-12 shooting while notching his fourth double-double of the season.

Caris LeVert finished with 18 points and Jakarr Sampson added 16 points. It was the first time Sampson reached double figures this season in 20 games.

The Pacers shot 59.1% (55-of-93), scored a season-high 77 points in the first half and held a 69-44 advantage in bench scoring. Seven players scored in double digits.

Magic Defense Disappears

One bright spot for the Magic on Wednesday was the play of Cole Anthony, who returned to action after missing 25 games with a rib fracture. He scored 13 points and dished seven assists in 25:39.

However, poor defense killed the Magic. They allowed the Wizards to shoot 57.6% from the field, including 52.8% (19-of-36) from long range.

“I’m not making a joke — they didn’t miss any (shots),” Magic coach Steve Clifford said. “With our defense, they were so open.”

Terrence Ross led the Magic with 24 points. It was his 14th game of at least 20 points this season.

Mo Bamba’s 19 points were a career high, and he also pulled down eight rebounds. The third-year center had never scored more than 15 points before.

Wendell Carter was 6-of-9 shooting and finished with 15 points.

Four Straight for Indiana

The teams have met once this season and Brodgon’s three-pointer with 2.8 seconds remaining in overtime lifted the Pacers to a 120-118 victory on Jan. 22 in Indianapolis as five-point favorites. It was Indiana’s fourth straight win in the series.

Brogdon finished with 23 points and six assists. Turner had 22 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots. Jeremy Lamb also scored 22 points and Sabonis just missed a triple-double with 18 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists.

Fournier (26), Vucevic (24) and Gordon (17) combined for 67 of the Magic’s points. Fournier and Gordon also had nine assists each while Vucevic tallied 12 rebounds.

One Orlando holdover from that game is Dwayne Bacon, who finished with 16 points.

While Indiana has the better team, the injury situation makes it a shaky favorite. Let’s lean toward the Magic keeping things close, if not pulling the outright upset.
