  • Read below for the Pistons vs Clippers preview, with odds and predictions

The two lowest scoring teams in the NBA clash Thursday night, when the Detroit Pistons (3-12, 0-7 away) visit the Los Angeles Clippers (8-7, 3-4 home).

It won’t help that superstars for both sides have already been ruled out for this one.

Detroit has lost four straight games, and are one of three teams yet to win on the road this season. After a tough start to the year, dropping four of their first six, the Clippers have gone 6-3 since, relying mostly on one of the best defenses in the league.

It all gets underway at 10:30pm ET from crypto.com Arena, in a game that you can see live on NBA League Pass.

Detroit Betting Outlook

For a team that was touted as one of the bright, up and coming squads, the Pistons have fallen flat this year, with just three wins over their first 15 games.

Last time out, they were beaten 115-111 by the Toronto Raptors. Missing was 2022 NBA Rookie of the Year Cade Cunningham, due to left shin soreness. The team has said he will miss at least a week, keeping him sidelined against the Clippers.

During the loss to Toronto, forward Isaiah Stewart left with a toe sprain, and he’s out for at least two weeks. Veteran Cory Joseph (hip) is questionable.

With Cunningham out, rookie Jaden Ivy led the way, scoring 21 points, adding eight assists and four boards before fouling out. The fifth pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, Ivy posted his second straight 20+ point effort. Bojan Bogdanovic added 18 points, five rebounds and five assists, while Marvin Bagley III had 16 points and five boards.

Detroit is tied for 29th in scoring in the league, putting up just 108.5 points per game. They’re really struggled shooting from distance, hitting on just 32.7% of their threes, which ranks 4th-worst in the NBA.

However, their defense isn’t doing them any favors, surrendering 118.2 points per game, which is second-last to the Spurs. To put that into perspective, every team they’ve faced turns into the no. 3 scoring team in the association.

Los Angeles Betting Outlook

How does the lowest scoring team in the NBA have a record above .500? Los Angeles scores just 104.9 points per contest. Consider that the 76ers and Pistons, tied for 2nd-lowest output, are closer to the 15th-place Spurs than the Clippers.

Their success relies heavily on the 4th-ranked scoring defense in the NBA, which holds teams to 106.9 points per game.

It’s part of the reason LA came seriously close to pulling out a game they had no business being in last time out, dropping a 103-101 decision in Dallas. The Clippers clawed back from a 25-point deficit but ultimately fell short.

They were without Kawhi Leonard, who’s still  made just two appearances all year as he works his way back from offseason ACL surgery. He’s already been ruled out for Thursday.

Leonard is not the only star in danger of missing the contest. Paul George, who led the team across the board with 23 points, seven rebounds and six assists (and 10 turnovers) in the loss to the Mavs, is dealing with a left hand contusion, and is listed as questionable.

Without Leonard to lean on, PG13 has played the star role, leading the team in scoring in nine straight games. Luke Kennard (calf) is also doubtful against the Pistons.

Pistons vs Clippers Prediction

Detroit has lost all seven road games they’ve played this year, and are just 1-6-1 against the spread in their last eight road games. Meanwhile, the Clips get it done against the lesser teams, running an 8-1 ATS mark in their last nine against teams with a winning percentage below .400.

While the wins aren’t coming, Dwane Casey’s club has at least kept it respectable during this 4-game slide, losing by nine points or less in three straight, with Boston the only double-digit loss.

That, plus LA’s injury woes makes the line a little less desirable, so let’s stick with the total. The under is 7-2 in the last nine head-to-head meetings between these two.

The Clips only average 101.6 points per game at home, while Detroit only musters 106.1 on the road.
