Spurs vs Lakers Injury Report

The injury report is a lengthy one for both teams, with a few of those players being key contributors.

Among the players out for the Lakers include LeBron James (abdominal strain) and Trevor Arica (ankle). Anthony Davis (thumb) and Talen Horton-Tucker (thumb) are probable and Avery Bradley (ankle) is questionable.

The Spurs will be missing Zach Collins (ankle) and Jakob Poeltl (reconditioning).

Lakers Try and Right the Ship

Los Angeles isn’t sitting in a bad spot through the first dozen or so games in the regular season. They’re floating around the .500 mark thus far, but the Lakers have struggled as of late. LA appears to be working things out with some new faces flooding the team this year.

In wins compared to losses, Los Angeles is two completely different teams. When they win, the Lakers are averaging 117 points and are shooting 49.5 percent from the field while giving up 111.7 points to opposing teams. In defeat, they are averaging just 101.8 points while shooting 41.5 percent and giving up 113 points to opponents.

Part of the struggles for Los Angeles have been due to James’ absence; LeBron last played on Nov. 2. In five games without James, the Lakers are 2-3 and have lost three of those games by an average of 14 points.

Outside of James, Anthony Davis has led the team averaging 23.8 points, 11 rebounds and 2.3 blocks, followed by Russell Westbrook with 19.4 points, 8.8 rebounds and 8.5 assists. Carmelo Anthony is averaging16.1 points and 3.9 rebounds.

Spurs Aim to Jumpstart Season

In another transition year for San Antonio, the Spurs are once again near the bottom of the standings early in the season. Kicking off a three-game road trip in Los Angeles on Sunday, San Antonio will try and get on a roll to dig out of that early-season hole.

The difference maker for San Antonio will occur on the defensive side of the ball, an area the Spurs have been solid in victories and disappointing in losses. In four wins, San Antonio has given up 99 points per game while allowing opponents to shoot 43.1 percent from the field. Through their eight losses, the Spurs are giving up 114.3 points and allowing opposing offenses to shooting 47.5 percent from the field.

Individually, Dejounte Murray has continued to lead San Antonio, averaging a team-best 18.1 points, 7.8 assists, 7.7 rebounds and two steals a game. Keldon Johnson is averaging 15.4 points and 6.6 rebounds and Poeltl has added 13.9 points, 9.7 rebounds and 2.6 assists.

Spurs vs Lakers Prediction

Both teams are coming off of losses and have struggled a bit as of late. One squad will get back on track on Sunday afternoon at Staples Center. It’s likely we see the Lakers overmatch the Spurs and come away with a win at home in an arena where they are 6-4 so far in the new year.

Even without James, Los Angeles has too much firepower for San Antonio to overcome and will ultimately use its home crowd to its favor to pull out a victory.

For the best bet of the night, go with the spread listed for the game, which is at 2.5 points. The Lakers will likely be able to cover, even without James in the lineup.

Best Bet: Lakers -2.5 (-110)
