A red-hot San Antonio Spurs team will face the struggling Utah Jazz on Thursday, August 13th, tip-off 6:30 PM EST at the HP Fieldhouse in Orlando.

The Spurs have been very impressive in the bubble, going 5-2 to this point, heading into this contest on a three-game winning streak. Utah on the other hand has suffered three straight defeats.

These two teams played one another last week as well, with San Antonio coming out on top by a score of 119-111.

San Antonio Fighting for Their Playoff Lives

The Spurs have come back with a vengeance since the restart, putting themselves in a prime position to make the playoffs for the 23rd straight year. As of right now, they’re in a three-way tie for ninth place, just a half game back of the Portland Trail Blazers, who hold the eighth spot.

Memphis, San Antonio, Portland, and the Suns will all play on Thursday, so depending on the results, we will know who exactly will feature in the play-in series this weekend.

If the Spurs win and the Blazers, Grizzlies, and Suns lose, San Antonio would finish as the eighth seed. They would finish in ninth if they win, and two of the three teams ahead lose, but, if just one of them loses, the Spurs would be eliminated even if they win.

If Gregg Popovich’s squad lose against Utah though, they would be immediately done. Bottom line is that San Antonio must beat the Jazz to keep their playoff fate alive.

They’re coming off a big win over their Texas rival Rockets, in which DeMar DeRozan guided the Spurs to a 123-105 victory. DeRozan has been their best offensive weapon in Orlando, while big man Jakob Poeltl has also done a fantastic job in place of LaMarcus Aldridge, who has been out since June.

Derrick White has been a very important piece of their success in the bubble as well, averaging around 20 points per game since the restart.

Utah Looking to End Losing Streak

Quin Snyder’s team has definitely felt the absence of Bogdan Bogdanovic, who was one of their top scorers in the regular season. The Croatian sharpshooter went on the shelf with a season-ending wrist injury in May.

In Orlando, the Jazz are just 2-5, with their only two wins coming against Memphis and New Orleans. In their loss against Dallas on Monday, Utah gave their second unit players a lot of minutes, with their starters playing less than 20 minutes each. Even in their loss to the Spurs last week, their bench guys started while the likes of Donovan Mitchell, Rudy Gobert, and Joe Ingles sat.

Although Thursday’s contest doesn’t mean a whole lot for Utah, it would be great to head into the postseason with momentum. They also have the opportunity to play spoiler and crush San Antonio’s playoff hopes. Mitchell and co. will be fired up and ready to go as they already have the sixth seed locked up in the Western Conference. Despite their record as of late, the Jazz have shot the ball at a 40 percent clip or better from long range over their last four games, including a 21 for 46 performance from downtown against the Mavs on Monday.

Best Bet

The importance of this game is much higher for San Antonio. A lot of things need to go right in order for them to grab one of the play-in spots, but a win can certainly help their case. It’s hard to take much out of their win over Utah since last week considering all their starters were out, but nevertheless, San Antonio has looked brilliant.

The Jazz will have all their main guys on the floor on Thursday, but with the playoffs on the line, I do believe the Spurs will pull out a victory. It’s going to be a very close game that comes down to the wire, but San Antonio will come out on top.

Pick: San Antonio ML (-320)
