Ohio State was down 62-51 with 14:29 left but answered with a 17-5 run to move in front 68-66. In all, Ohio State scored 38 points in that span to improve to 5-1 against ranked teams this season.

Maryland’s Offense Disappears

Perhaps Ohio State’s defense will serve as medicine for Maryland, which is coming off its worst offensive game of the season in a 55-50 loss at Penn State on Friday as a three-point underdog.

It wasn’t pretty

Maryland had a season-low for points and assists (6) while its 16 turnovers were a season-high. The Terrapins missed their last 10 field goal attempts over the final 7:32.

Guard Eric Ayala scored nearly half of Maryland’s points as he had 23 to tie a season-high. It was the third 20-point game of the season for the junior guard, who is scoring a team-high 14.4 points a game.

Junior guard Aaron Wiggins was held to a season-low 2 points as he was 1-for-11 on field goal attempts. He had averaged 15.9 in his previous eight games and his season average is 12.3 to go with 5.4 rebounds a game.

Sophomore forward Donta Scott has averages of 12.5 points and 6.5 rebounds a game. He is also shooting 52.6% on field goals and 45.2% beyond the arc.

Splitsville

The teams split their two games last season with each winning on its home floor as 3-point favorites – Maryland 67-55 and Ohio State 79-72.

Maryland held Ohio State to 31.3% in the first game. The Terrapins had won seven of the previous eight in the series before losing in Columbus despite 16 points from Ayala.

Playing road favorites in college basketball can be dangerous at times. However, Ohio State has proven it is comfortable away from Columbus and should handle Maryland after beating more difficult competition on the road.
