#14 Virginia (11-3, 7-1 ACC) returns to the court on Wednesday (Feb. 3rd, 9 pm EST) for a showdown with NC State (7-6, 3-5 ACC). The ACC leaders are looking to rebound following their first conference loss of the season to rival Virginia Tech.

The Wolfpack meanwhile, have dropped five of their past six, and are fresh off a 76-73 defeat to Syracuse.

#14 Virginia vs NC State Odds

Team Spread Moneyline Total
Virginia Cavaliers -6.5 (-110) OFF Over 129 (-110)
NC State Wolfpack +6.5 (-110) OFF Under 129 (-110)

Odds taken Feb. 2nd.

Not surprisingly, the Cavaliers opened up as a sizeable 6.5-point favorite, in a game that features a total of 129. This game was supposed to be played back on January 20th, but was postponed due to COVID issues within the NC State program.

Cavaliers Eyeing a Bounce Back

Virginia’s 65-51 loss to the Hokies snapped a season-best seven-game winning streak, and was one of its sloppiest games of the year. They coughed up a 10-point second half lead and were outscored 21-4 down the stretch.

The Cavaliers, who rank 17th in the nation in defensive efficiency, allowed Virginia Tech to knock down 61% of its second half attempts, and were abused in the post by Keve Aluma to the tune of 29 points and 10 boards.

Virginia’s offense meanwhile, which leads the ACC in points per game and field goal percentage, shot just 37% from the floor and put up a season-low 51 points.

7-footer Jay Huff led the way with 13 points, while Trey Murphy and leading scorer Sam Hauser both added 10. It was the first time the Cavaliers have failed to reach 60 points this season, and only the fifth time they’ve failed to score at least 70.

Wolfpack Shorthanded

NC State meanwhile, were forced to face the Orange without two of its three leading scorers. Devon Daniels, who averages a team-high 16.5 points per game, tore his ACL last week, while big-man DJ Funderburk was a surprise scratch due to a team violation.

Funderburk’s status for this matchup is once again in doubt, as head coach Kevin Keatts wouldn’t commit to him being back in the lineup on Wednesday.

Without two of their top scorers, Jericole Hellems led the eay with a game-high 24, to go along with 9 rebounds, while Manny Bates racked up 17 points and 14 boards.

The Wolfpack have now surrendered an average of 83.5 points per game over their last four outings, and rank last in the ACC in points allowed and opponent field goal percentage.

Offensively, they rank fifth in the conference in points per game, but middle of the pack in shooting percentage and 3-point makes. With Daniels out for the season, and Funderburk’s status in jeopardy, we can expect those numbers to drop especially when facing Virginia’s elite defense.

Cavaliers Crush WolfPack

For NC State to pull off the upset here the recipe is simple. They need to contain the Cavaliers offense. The Wolfpack are 5-0 when holding opponents below 44.3% from the field, and 2-6 when enemy shooters eclipse that mark.

Virginia has failed to shoot at least 45% in just three games all season, and only once in ACC play. Given the fact that NC State ranks last in the conference in points allowed and opponent shooting percentage, it seems doubtful they’ll be able to hold the best shooting team in the ACC below 45%.

The Wolfpack are 2-5-1 ATS in ACC games this season, and 0-4 ATS following a loss, while the Cavaliers are 5-3 versus the spread in conference play, and 3-1 ATS as a road favorite.

Pick: Virginia Cavaliers -6.5 (-110)
