Auburn vs Kentucky Odds, Lines, and Spread

Two teams used to winning big will try to salvage something out of lost seasons when Auburn visits Kentucky at 1 p.m. ET Saturday in an SEC game at Rupp Arena in Lexington.

Auburn is 11-10 overall and 5-7 in the SEC after being one of just seven Division I programs to win at least 25 games each of the previous three seasons. At 5-13 and 4-7, Kentucky has its most losses since the 2008-09 season – the year before John Calipari replaces Billy Gillispie — and is on course for its first losing season since 1988-89.

The Wildcats, though, are favored.

Auburn Snaps Skid

Auburn, which lost all five starters from last season’s 25-win team, ended a three-game losing streak Tuesday with a 73-67 road victory over Vanderbilt. The game was a push as the Tigers were six-point favorites.

Freshman guard Sharife Cooper and junior guard Jamal Johnson led Auburn with 19 points each.

Cooper had 18 of his points in the second half and made 10 of 11 free throw attempts. Since being cleared to play by the NCAA, the McDonald’s All-American has averaged 20.8 points, 8.7 assists and 4.2 rebounds in 10 games.

Johnson has scored in double figures in two of the last three games after scoring a combined 18 points in the previous five games. He has just 13 turnovers in 513 minutes played this season.

Sophomore Devan Cambridge added 11 points, including a 3-point field goal that put Auburn ahead for good, 40-38, with 13:08 left. He has hit double digits in scoring four games in a row.

Sophomore guard Allen Flannigan (13.9) and freshman guard Justin Powell (11.7) also have double-figure scoring average. So does Jaylin Williams (10.9), a sophomore forward who pulled down 10 rebounds against Vanderbilt.

Auburn’s defensive effort against the Commodores was encouraging. The Tigers had given up at least 75 points in their previous six games and eight of their last nine.

Losing Continues for Kentucky

Kentucky’s losing streak reached four games Tuesday night when it was edged at home by Arkansas 81-80 as a two-point favorite. It was also the Wildcats’ seventh defeat in their last eight games. The Wildcats lost nine of their top 10 players from last year’s 25-win team.

Freshman guard Brandon Boston Jr. led five Kentucky scorers in double digits with 17 points. He was followed by senior forward Olivier Saar (13), senior guard Davion Mintz (11), freshman guard Devin Askew (11) and sophomore forward Keion Brooks Jr. (10). Saar also had 10 rebounds and four assists.

Down 72-60 with 6:11 remaining, Kentucky went ahead 80-79 on Mintz’s 3-point field goal from the right wing with 12.3 seconds to go. Arkansas’ Jalen Tate countered with two free throws with 4.3 seconds left and that proved to be the winning points when Kentucky had a turnover on its ensuing possession.

Boston had his third-highest point total of the season. He leads the team in scoring with an 11.9 average and is also pulling down 5.3 rebounds a game.

Boston is living up to his hype as a five-star recruit.

After missing the first nine games because of injury, Brooks has averaged of 11.6 points and 6.1 rebounds in nine games. Saar is averaging 10.6 points and 5.8 rebounds as a graduate transfer from Wake Forest.

Kentucky will be without freshman guard Terrance Clarke until mid-March. He has been limited to seven games this season because of a right leg injury. Clarke is scoring 10.7 points a game.

Wildcats Try for Split

On Jan. 16, Auburn beat Kentucky 66-59 at home as a three-point favorite behind 21 points and nine rebounds from Flannigan. Mintz’s 11 points topped Kentucky.

Kentucky made just 9 of 16 free throws for 56.3%. Auburn was 15 of 21 at the line for 71.4%.

Look for Kentucky to turn the tables in this rematch, taking advantage of Auburn’s porous defense to end its losing streak.
