Two teams looking to snap two-game losing streaks square off when Boise State meets Temple at 12:00 p.m. ET Friday in a loses’ bracket game at the Shriner Children’s Charleston Classic at TD Arena in Charleston, S.C.

Both teams were defeated in the first round Thursday. Boise State (1-2) dropped a 67-61 decision to #22 St. Bonaventure and Temple (1-2) was routed by Clemson 75-48.

Boise State is the favorite in a game that will be televised by ESPNU.

Boise Nearly Pulls Upset

Boise State had a chance to take down St. Bonaventure as Marcus Shaver Jr.’s three-point field goal with 5:40 left put the Broncos ahead 59-57. However, Boise State made just one of its last nine field goal attempts and the Bonnies went on a game-ending 10-2 run.

Senior guard Emmanuel Akot scored a career-high 24 points for Boise State and knocked down six of nine three-point attempts. However, he was held scoreless in the last seven minutes.

A former Arizona five-star recruit, Akot is averaging a team-best 15.3 points a game in his second season with the Broncos since transferring. Shaver finished with 10 points and has a season scoring of 12.0.

Senior guard Devonaire Doutrive is Boise State’s third-leading scorer with an 11.3 average after undergoing recovering from offseason arthroscopic knee surgery.

Doutrive was limited to seven points by the Bonnies and was shut out in the second half.

Boise State shot just 32.8% (19 of 58) from the field against veteran-laden St. Bonaventure, which has all five starters back from a team that won both the Atlantic 10 Conference regular season and tournament titles last season.

Senior forward Mladen Armus gives Boise State a veteran presence inside. He is averaging 7.7 points and 8.3 rebounds a game.

A Bad Day for Temple

Poor shooting and poor defense proved to be a bad combination for Temple in its loss to Clemson.

The Owls made just 4 of 20 shots from beyond the arc for 20.0% and shot 35.8% (19 of 53) overall. Meanwhile, Clemson shot 54.5% (30 of 55) from the field and 52.4% (11 of 21) on three-pointers.

Sophomore forward Tai Strickland scored 16 points to lead Temple. He lifted his season average to 11.7 after being limited to six games in 2020-21 because of a shoulder injury after transferring from Wisconsin.

Freshman guard Damian Dunn’s 13 points matched his season average. He is also pulling down 5.3 rebounds a game.

No other Temple player scored more than seven points and sophomore guard Khalif Battle was held to four points on 2-of-7 shooting. He had scored 48 points combined in the Owls’ first two games.

Temple trailed just 28-26 with 4:38 remaining in the first half. However, Clemson scored the last 10 points before halftime then outscored the Owls 15-4 to start the second half and push its lead to 53-30 with 15:29 to go.

Temple freshman forward Nick Jourdain isn’t a scoring threat at 3.0 points a game. However, he is a defensive presence down low with averages of 7.3 rebounds and 3.0 blocked shots.

Boise State-Temple Prediction

In the first-ever meeting between the two schools, look for veteran Boise State to cover the number against a young Temple team.
