Creighton Straight-Up Losers in Last 5

After a great start to the season, it’s been a swift fall from grace for the Bluejays. They’ve lost five consecutive games and we’re the chalk in the last three, going 0-3 ATS in those contests.

To further illustrate how poor they’ve been playing, Creighton were double digit favorites in both their losses to Nebraska and Brigham Young last week. So why the precipitous decline in play?

One issue is their sudden lack of rebounding. They’ve been outrebounded 129-97 in their last three losses. In their matchup with BYU where Creighton were 13-point favorites, the Bluejays allowed 16 offensive boards leading to 21 second-chance points.

Shooting has also been a major issue during this five game skid. In their first loss of the season, Creighton shot 45.8% in a two-point loss to a ranked opponent, but it’s got worse since then. Overall, the Bluejays have shot just 38.1% in the last five games.

This is a team that had preseason aspirations to be contenders in the odds to win the NCAA tournament, but if they don’t fix things in a hurry, they might not even make the big dance in March.

Marquette Anxious to Pounce on Reeling Creighton Squad

While their opponents are in the doghouse, the Golden Eagles have been trending in the opposite direction. Winners of five of their last six, you can count on Marquette being very eager to capitalize on a sliding Creighton squad that beat them three times last year.

Marquette should be aggressive off the hop against this Creighton side. The Bluejays have taken seven of the last eight head-to-head meetings between these, but two of their matchups last year were really tight. On New Year’s Day, Creighton needed overtime to defeat Marquette and then won by a single point a month later.

In their last six games, the only loss Marquette suffered was to 22nd ranked Wisconsin. They ended the month of November by destroying one of the best teams in the nation, the Baylor Bears, by 26 points. Baylor has only one other loss this season, a seven point defeat to Virginia Tech, so that’s a very impressive W on Marquette’s list.

Kam Jones and Olivier-Maxence Prosper pace the Golden Eagles in scoring with both averaging over 15 points per game. This is a very efficient offensive team. According to KenPom, Marquette ranks 14th amongst Division I teams in effective field goal percentage and 19th in adjusted offensive efficiency.

Under coach Shaka Smart, the Golden Eagles have made a habit of saving its top performances for the best opponents on its schedule. You can bet they’ll be ready to deal with a Creighton side that only recently dropped out of the top 25 ranked teams in college hoops.

Creighton vs Marquette Prediction

Buckets have come easy to the Golden Eagles this season, and perhaps that’s why the over/under has been set at 154.5 points in the college basketball odds for this game. To reach that total though, Creighton will also need to fill the hoop.

Despite that inflated over/under total, our best bet here is to roll with the streaks and trends and pick Marquette to cover. They should smell blood in the water with this suddenly discombobulated Creighton squad, so take the Golden Eagles and the points.

Pick: Marquette Golden Eagles -4.5 (-104)
