The teams have not played since Nov. 29, 2019, when DePaul improved to 8-0 with a 73-68  road victory as a four-point underdog. That was only their second meeting since March 16, 1983, when the Blue Demons won 76-73 in the first round of the NIT in Chicago. The conference title odds are not kind to either.

Minnesota Starts Quickly

Newcomers, including high-profile native Minnesotan Dawson Garcia, have taken center stage in the Golden Gophers’ first two victories, a 61-60 squeaker over Western Michigan and an easier 72-54 victory over St. Francis Brooklyn the last time out last Friday.

Dawson, a 6’11 2020 McDonald’s All-American, is on his third team after spending a year at Marquette and another at North Carolina, had 23 points and seven rebounds to help the Gophers avoid an upset against Western Michigan, when they shot 43.1 percent from the field and made 9 of 23 free throw attempts. Morehead State junior transfer guard 6’4 Ta’Lon Cooper has 25 points and 16 assists in the first two games while taking over at point. He averaged 9.1 points and 5.9 assists a year ago and had 17 points, eight rebounds and 10 assists in the opener.

Swingman 6’7 Jaden Henley, a three-star recruit who became the first freshman to start the Gophers’ season opener since 2018-19, scored 16 points against St. Francis Brooklyn as the Gophers waiting for medical clearance on 6’7 Jamison Battle, who averaged a team-high 17.5 points and made 75 3-pointers a year ago and was named to the 2022-23 preseason All-Big Ten team. Battle had foot surgery on Oct. 28 and has not played since.

DePaul Rides the Portal

Coach Tony Stubblefield had received strong early production from a series of transfers/newcomers headlined by Oklahoma fifth-year senior point guard 6’1 Umoja Gibson, who had career highs in assists in each of his first two games with the Blue Demons. He had six against Loyola (Md.) in the season opener and eight in a 86-74 victory over Western Illinois the last time out Friday.

Gibson, who withdrew from the NBA draft before transferring, also leads the Blue Demons with 37 points.  He ranks third in NCAA Division 1 with 341 made 3-pointers and is eighth with 174 career steals. Others have contributed to a team that lost its three leading scorers. Six’8 forward Javan Johnson, a 2022 mid-season transfer from Iowa State who also missed time with a broken hand, had his first career double-double in the opener and has 38 points and 16 rebounds in the first two games. JC transfer 6’8 Da’Sean Nelson is averaging 12.5 points and 5.5 rebounds.

The Blue Demons have played the first two games without a pair of potential starters in 6’11 senior Nick Ongenda and 6’4 Caleb Murphy. Ongenda, who averaged 8.7 points and 4.3 rebounds a year ago,  is week-to-week with a hand injury. South Florida transfer Murphy expected to miss several weeks after undergoing wrist surgery. Murphy, an All-AAC freshman selection in 2020-21, also withdrew his name from the NBA draft last summer,

DePaul vs Minnesota Prediction

Both the DePaul and the Minnesota are missing key components, but the Blue Demons seem better equipped to handle the loss of big man Ongenda because the strong early player of Gibson, an elite point, and Johnson. The absence of Battle will be too much for the Gophers to overcome here.  DePaul started 9-1 a year ago and could do it again.

Pick: DePaul +0.5 (-110)
