Hoyas vs Red Storm Betting Trends

Sunday afternoon’s matchup marks the first meetings between these teams since December 2020. St. John’s has earned the straight up and against the spread win in two of its past three head-to-head dates with the Hoyas. Each of those wins have come on home court, capped by a decisive 94-83 win as 4.5-point chalk in their most recent clash. The Red Storm’s recent success against Georgetown marks somewhat of a turnaround after falling to defeat in five of their previous seven matchups, including consecutive home losses as betting favorites. The OVER has easily prevailed in each of the Red Storm’s recent wins, ending a 3-0 run for the UNDER.

Overall this season, the Red Storm has struggled to consistently reward loyal sports bettors. The team covered in their last outing, an 86-78 road loss to UConn on Wednesday as 10.5-point underdogs. However, that marked just their second ATS win in 11 outings since mid-November, and just once in their past nine home dates. The Hoyas have also struggled, going winless ATS during their current 0-3 SU slide. Georgetown was also blown out in two previous road dates this season, falling to defeat by an average margin of 15 points in losses to San Diego State and South Carolina.

Georgetown Hoyas Outlook

Hobbled by injuries, the Hoyas find themselves buried at the bottom of the Big East Conference standings as they stumble into the Big Apple for Sunday’s contest. The club was idle for three weeks, with four games getting postponed during that stretch. And they have come up short since returning to action last week, falling to defeat in their first two conference matchups, capped by Thursday’s 72-58 loss to Butler.

Among the key players to miss time are starting point guard Dante Harris and team captain Donald Carey, each of whom remain listed as questionable for Sunday. The Hoyas were also missing head coach Patrick Ewing on Thursday due to COVID-19 protocols.

Winners in just two of their past 13 regular season contests, the Hoyas could once again find themselves leaning on freshman guard Tyler Beard for offensive production. Beard has risen to the occasion when given added responsibility this season. He led the team with 15 points while playing 39 minutes in Thursday’s loss. Beard has now seen 30 minutes or more of playing time on three occasions, and has tallied team-high point totals in two of those contests.

St. John’s Red Storm Outlook

The Red Storm were twice forced to overcome double-digit deficits before forcing overtime in this week’s loss to the Huskies. Indeed, the team has struggled to put away opponents after recess in recent outings. St. John’s has led at halftime on three occasions during its current 1-3 SU slide, but have let victory slip away with shaky second-half performances in two of those contests.

A lack of finish was a particular concern in Connecticut, where Red Storm shooters converted just 34.6% of field goal attempts. The team has also hit on just 31.9% of three-point attempts over their two recent losses. However, they can to sit a respectable 79th in adjusted offensive efficiency at Kenpom.

Julian Champagne rebounded from his worst outing of the season on Thursday. The junior big man collected just 11 points in a crushing 83-73 loss to No. 16 Providence on January 8. However, the team’s leading scorer led the way with 27 points versus UConn, and has scored at 19 points in six home dates this season.

Hoyas vs Red Storm Prediction

While both these teams are struggling, the Hoyas face a much greater challenge to regain the form that made them Big East tournament champions last season. Look for the Red Storm to enjoy home cooking as they run up the score against the overmatched Hoyas.

The Picks: Red Storm -10.5 (-110); UNDER 160.5 (-110)
