Everyone into the GSU Act

Georgia Southern has relied on balance to build its impressive early-season record after losing its top two scorers from last season.

The Eagles have seven players scoring at least 7.6 points a game. And seven players are also averaging at least 21.2 minutes.

Georgia Southern’s top player has been junior forward Andrei Savrasov. He is averaging 13.0 points and 6.0 rebounds.

Savrasov scored a team-high 10 points against Wofford as Georgia Southern struggled to put the ball in the basket. The Eagles shot just 39.6% (17 of 43).

Sloppy play also hurt Georgia Southern. It had 19 turnovers while Wofford committed eight.

Senior guard Elijah McCadden, Georgia Southern’s third-leading scorer in 2020-21, is scoring 9.3 points a game and averaging 1.5 steals. He finished with eight points Sunday.

Sophomore wing Cam Bryant is third in scoring at 9.2

Devoe Expected Back for Tech

Georgia Tech figures to get standout senior guard Michael Devoe back after he sat out an 85-70 win over Charleston Southern with the flu Monday night.

Devoe is making a strong early case to succeed former teammate Moses Wright as the ACC Player of the Year. Devoe is averaging 22.8 points, 5.8 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 1.8 steals.

In his last game, Devoe scored a career-high 37 points against Georgia in a win. He is shooting 58.9% (33 of 56) from the field and 65.0% (13 of 20) from three-point range.

Senior wing Jordan Usher is also off to an outstanding start. He has averages of 17.2 points, 8.4 rebounds and 3.2 assists.

Usher picked up the scoring slack against Charleston Southern with Devoe sidelined as he finished with a game-high 24 points and 10 rebounds. Usher was 9 of 15 on field goals, including 3 of 4 from beyond the arc, while posting his second double-double of the season.

Junior guard Kyle Sturdivant scored 11 of his 17 points in the first half when Georgia Tech took a 42-29 lead. Georgia Southern was within 78-70 with 4:01 left but Georgia Tech scored the game’s final seven points, including a three-pointer by Usher.

Junior center Rodney Howard contributed 12 points and six rebounds. Sophomore guard Deivon Smith, a transfer from Mississippi State, added 11 points as Georgia Tech shot 57.4% (35 of 61).

Georgia Southern vs Georgia Tech Prediction

The in-state schools have only met twice, and Georgia Tech is 2-0 in the series. The last game was all the way back in the 1997-98 season, though.

While Georgia Tech has two star players in Devoe and Usher, Georgia Southern’s depth should help it stay in the game.

The Pick: Georgia Southern +12.5 (-110)
