Two teams looking to bolster their NCAA Tournament resumes square off when Georgia Tech visits Clemson at 8 pm ET Friday in an ACC game at Littlejohn Coliseum.

Georgia Tech (9-7 overall, 5-5 in the ACC) has lost four of its last six games and is the underdog Friday.

Meanwhile, Clemson (12-5, 6-5) has posted back-to-back wins following a stretch of four losses in five games. The average margin in those four defeats was 24.8 points.

Clemson Back on Track

Clemson is coming off a 78-61 win over Syracuse last Friday at home as a three-point favorite.

Senior forward Aamir Simms had 18 points and 11 rebounds while making 7 of 9 field goal attempts. He recorded his second double-double of the season and seventh of his career.

Over the last four games, Simms is averaging 17.3 points. That has lifted his team-leading average to 12.6. He also tops Clemson with 6.2 rebounds a game including 2.8 off the offensive glass.

Simms is the only Clemson player with a double-figure scoring average.

Sophomore guard Nick Honor added 15 points against Syracuse on five 3-point field goals. He had a combined 15 points in the previous four games while shooting just 3 of 15 from beyond the arc.

Senior guard Clyde Trapp scored wo points but still made a major contribution. He set a career high with 11 assists and had eight rebounds.

Clemson shot 53% from the field, including knocking down 10-of-23 from 3-point range for 43%. The Tigers held Syracuse to 30%, including a dismal 12% in the first half when they built a 39-19 lead thanks to runs of 15-2, 10-1 and 12-4.

It marked the fourth time this season Clemson held an opponent under 20 points in a half. The Tigers are 11th in the nation in KenPom.com’s adjusted defensive efficiency, allowing 90.1 points per 100 possessions, and second in the ACC in scoring defense at 62.6 points a game.

Georgia Tech Misses Upset

Georgia Tech sputtered down the stretch Wednesday night and wound up losing at home to #9 Virginia 57-49. The Yellow Jackets, who were 4.5-point underdogs, led 44-41 with 6:18 left but were outscored 16-5 the rest of the way.

Senior guard Jose Alvarado shined again in a losing effort as he scored 18 points. He has averages of 17.6 points, 4.3 assists and 2.9 steals a game while shooting 53.4% on field goal attempts, 43.2% from 3-point range and 87.8% on free throws.

Junior guard Michael Devoe had an awful shooting night, making just 1 of 10 attempts from the field and missing all five of his 3-point attempts. Devoe is averaging 13.4 points and 3.0 assists.

Georgia Tech led 26-20 at halftime. However, as a team, the Yellow Jackets wound up shooting 36 percent (18 of 50).

In addition to Alvarado and Devoe, two other Georgia Tech players have double-digit scoring averages — senior forward Moses Wright (16.1) and senior wing Jordan Usher (11.4). Wright also has a 7.7 rebound average and has committed just 21 turnovers in 578 minutes played.

Tech Looks for Sweep

Georgia Tech defeated Clemson 83-65 on January 20 at home as a two-point underdog, the Yellow Jackets’ third straight win in the series.

Devoe led the winners with 22 points six assists and three steals. Wright and Usher added 21 points apiece as Georgia Tech shot 57%.

Simms topped Clemson with 19 points, five rebounds and three blocked shots.

Georgia Tech isn’t likely to have it as easy against Clemson’s defense in this rematch, but the Tigers are last in the ACC in scoring with 65.6 points a game. Look for the Yellow Jackets to keep it close.
