Neither Gonzaga nor Texas finished particularly well in 2021-22. Gonzaga was 4-2 SU and 1-5 ATS in its last six, failing to cover in any of its three NCAA tournament games while being eliminated by Arkansas in the Sweet 16. Texas finished 3-5 SU and 1-6-1 ATS, losing and failing to cover its only Big 12 tournament game and going 1-1 in the NCAA Tournament, losing to  Purdue in the second round.

Gonzaga Set for Another NCAA Run

Give Gonzaga credit for its typically ferocious nonconference schedule. The Zags’ program is at a point where it probably does not need to schedule Michigan State, Texas, Kentucky, Baylor, Alabama and Purdue/West Virginia as it has this year, but the exposure is great, theTV money is even greater and the competition is something it does not face in league play.

Forward Drew Timme, everyone’s preseason All-American, took over late in the 64-63 victory over Michigan State on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier in the San Diego harbor last Friday. Timme had 11 of his 23 points in the final 7:02 to help the Zags overcome a 12-point deficit. He added 13 rebounds. Timme had 37 points in the Bulldogs’ 86-74 victory over Texas at home in Spokane at this time last season.

For all Timme’s skill and experience around the hoop, 6’7 Julian Strawther may be the best NBA prospect on a team that once again is a top contender in the college basketball national championship odds. Strawther averaged 14.5 points and 7.0 rebounds and will take a larger role after the losses of hard-to-replace center Chet Holmgren and point guard Andrew Nembhard to the NBA draft. Returnee Rasir Bolton and transfers Malachi Smith and Efton Reid III chip in.

Texas Looks to Take Another Step Up

The Longhorns return leading scorers and preseason All-Big 12 players forward Timmy Allen and guard Marcus Carr, and they attempted to address a perceived deficit in athleticism by adding Iowa State transfer 6’0 point guard Tyrese Hunter, New Mexico State transfer guard Sir’Jabari Rice, and highly regarded 6’8 forward recruit Dillon Mitchell. Forward Dylan Disu will be a plus if he has overcome knee issues that limited him a year ago.

Texas Chris Beard preached doing the team-required dirty work during his successful run at Texas Tech, and the Longhorns bought in during his first season in Austin a year ago. Texas limited opponents to 41.7 percent shooting from the field, had a plus-3.4 turnover margin and a plus-4.0 assist margin. Mitchell will help improve a plus 1.1-rebounding margin.

Hunter was the Big 12 Freshman of the Year in 2021-22 and Rice was a three-time All-Western Athletic Conference selection.

Gonzaga vs Texas Prediction

The public loves Gonzaga so much that it is seldom a value play. The Bulldogs were 15-15-2 ATS a year ago, 4-2 ATS in true road games, with all of those coming in WCAC play. Texas coach Chris Beard put things in perspective after the Longhorns’ season opening victory over UTEP when he said, “college basketball is about players.” Gonzaga has another strong roster, but the Longhorns have a group that can compete. This is the first time Gonzaga has been an underdog since it beat Arizona in Tucson as a two-point dog in 2019.

  • Pick: Texas -0.5 (-114)
  • Season CBK: 4-1 ATS
