Will Dosunmu Play?

Illinois star junior guard Ayo Dosunmu has missed the last two games with a broken nose. Coach Brad Underwood would not commit to whether Dosunmu would play at Michigan, saying Monday that he is “day to day.”

KenPom.com ranks Dosunmu as the nation’s fourth-best player. He is averaging 21.0 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 5.3 assists.

Illinois was able to pull a road upset of Wisconsin 74-69 on Saturday without Dosunmu and as a 4.5-point underdog.

Sophomore center Kofi Cockburn led the Fighting Illini with 19 points. Freshman guard Andre Curbelo added 17 points, one off his career high, and senior guard Da’Monte Williams scored a season-high 12 points.

Illinois had a season-worst 20 turnovers but compensated by holding Wisconsin to 17-of-62 shooting before the Badgers made their last seven field-goal attempts to finish at 34.8%.

Meanwhile, Illinois shot 52.1% (25 of 48) from the floor, making each of its last five field goal attempts as well as its final 10 free throws. The Illini also held a 39-27 rebounding advantage.

Cockburn is averaging 17.8 points and 9.9 rebounds while shooting 66.8%. Senior guard Trent Frazier has a 10.4 scoring average.

After helping replace some of Dosunmu’s lost scoring Saturday, Williams is shooting 54.8% overall and 55.1% on three-point attempts.

Michigan’s Star Power

While Dosunmu is iffy, Michigan will have two of the top players in the nation in its lineup in freshman center Hunter Dickinson (ranked #3 by KenPom) and sophomore guard Franz Wagner (#9).

Dickinson is shooting 62.1% from the field while averaging 14.8 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 1.8 blocked shots. Wagner has averages of 13.6 points and 6.4 rebounds and is a 53.5% shooter.

Wagner matched his season-high with 21 points Saturday as Michigan won at Indiana 73-57 as a seven-point favorite. He added six rebounds and three assists.

Wagner has also heated up in the homestretch of the regular season by scoring 20-plus points in three of the last four games.

Senior forward Isaiah Livers had his second double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds. He is averaging 16.1 points in the seven games since Michigan took its only loss of the season to Minnesota.

Overall, Livers is averaging 14.5 points and 6.2 rebounds. He is also having a fine shooting season, making 48.2% of his field-goal attempts, 45.6% of his threes, and 87.2% of his foul shots.

Michigan is fifth in the nation in adjusted offensive efficiency, according to KenPom, at 121.7 points per 100 possessions, and fourth defensively with an 87.7 mark.

They Finally Meet

This is the lone meeting of the regular season between Michigan and Illinois. The Illini swept a pair of games in 2019-20, winning 71-62 at home as a 1.5-point favorite and 64-62 on the road as a 4.5-point underdog.

Dosunmu totaled 41 points in the two games. Cockburn had 19 points in the first meeting but was held to five in the rematch.

It seems that there is another Game of the Year every week in the Big Ten this season, a testament to the conference’s strength. Michigan has an outstanding team and is having a great season but the number on this one seems high whether Dosunmu plays or not.

Pick: Illinois +8 (-110)
