The Hawkeyes are 10-4 against the spread this season and are 10-4 going over the total. They have covered the spread four times during their current five-game winning streak and have won those five by an average of 15.4 points. Ten of their 12 victories this season have been by 15 points or more.

Iowa (12-2, 6-1 Big Ten) leads the KenPom rankings in offensive efficiency, which measures points scored per 100 possessions and is adjusted for the strength of the opponent. The Hawkeyes are third in adjusted efficiency margin, behind only Gonzaga and Baylor.

Iowa Was Built for This Season

Senior Garza, who leads NCAA Division I in scoring at 26.9 points per game, is surrounded by a veteran group that includes senior starter guard Jordan Bohannon and juniors starters Joe Wieskamp and Connor McCaffery, one of coach Fran McCaffery’s two sons on the roster. That quartet has combined for 362 career starts.

Garza, 6-foot-11 and 265 pounds, entered his name into the NBA draft last summer before opting to return to school, and Bohannon and reserve forward Jack Nunge received an extra year of eligibility after being granted hardship waivers because of injuries in 2019-20.

Bohannon, who had hip surgery 13 months ago, is 41 assists short of setting the school career assists record and has a school-record seven double-doubles in points and assists. Garza has six double-doubles this season. Wieskamp became the 50th player in school history with 1,000 points earlier this season.

Newcomer freshman forward Keegan Murray is one of 17 NCAA Division I players, and the only non-starter, with at least 90 points, 60 rebounds, 15 blocks, and 15 steals this season.

Iowa Uses a Two-Pronged Offensive Attack

The attention Garza requires on the low block leaves extra space on the perimeter, and Iowa has taken advantage. The Hawkeyes are third among Power 6 teams in both three-point field goals per game (10.4) and three-point field goal percentage (39.4). The Hawkeyes lead the Big Ten in threes made and are second in percentage.

Bohannon’s 39 threes are third in the Big Ten, and he has made three or more 3-pointers in six of Iowa’s last seven games. The Hawkeyes are 9-0 when he makes multiple 3-pointers this season.

With the abundance of offensive options, Iowa has had scoring runs of at least 10-0 on 19 occasions this season. It had a 20-0 run in an 89-67 victory at Maryland on Jan. 7. The Hawkeyes’ only losses this season were against No. 1 Gonzaga and No. 17 Minnesota, which overcame a seven-point deficit in the final 44 seconds of regulation in a 102-95 overtime victory.

The Hoosiers Have Their Own Quality Big Man

Indiana sophomore forward Trayce Jackson-Davis, 6-foot-9 and 245 pounds,  is a force inside and one of the few Big Ten opponents with the size to play with Garza. He is fourth the Big Ten and sixth in the Power 6 with a 20.4 scoring average and is averaging 8.9 rebounds per game. He is shooting 53.4 percent from the floor and has 26 blocked shots.

Jackson-Davis has 17 career double-doubles, and the Hoosiers are 14-3 in those games. He is the only Indiana player in the last 25 years to have two games of 25 points and 15 rebounds in a season. He leads NCAA Division I in two-point field goal attempts (187) and is second in makes (100). Garza leads with 117 makes.

Jackson-Davis had 17 points and 11 rebounds in the Hoosiers’ victory last season.  He is one of Ken Pom’s nine candidates for the player of the year award, seemingly destined to Garza.

Indiana Has Played Well in the Rivalry

Indiana (8-5, 3-3) won the only game between the two last season, 89-77, in Bloomington, and has won four of the last six , including one in the 2017 Big Ten postseason tournament. The Hoosiers have won three of the last five in Iowa City. Over the longer term, Iowa has won nine of the last 13 at home.

Garza scored 38 points against the Hawkeyes last season but did get a lot of help, as Wieskamp (16 points) was the only other Iowa player in double figures. Departed Indiana guard Devonte Green had a career-high 27 points and made 7 of 11 3-pointers as the Hoosiers opened a 20-point lead five minutes into the second half.

Indiana has made only 85 3-pointers this season, 11th in the league, and is shooting 32.4 percent from distance.

The Hoosiers are 0-4 against ranked teams this season, 2-2 against the spread in those games. They have not played in a week after the Michigan State game last Thursday was postponed by COVID-19 in the Spartans’ program. The time off could help Indiana guard Armaan Franklin (12.8 points) further recover from an ankle injury that kept him out two of the last three games.

The pick: Iowa (-10.5)
