Tigers’ Season Slipping Away?

When began as a promising season for the LSU Tigers has quickly come undone. The Tigers stormed out of the gate with 10 wins in their first 12 outings, including a 5-1 start to conference play. However, the team has been badly outplayed at times during a 1-4 run that has featured three outright defeats by wide double-digit margins.

LSU also has a long way to go to overcome its current lengthy road swoon. With losses in four of six away contests this season, the Tigers have now gone 3-9 straight up in 12 road contests since the beginning of February 2020.

The Tigers’ woes also extend to the sportsbooks, where they are currently enduring a 1-5 ATS run, and have covered in just five of 15 road dates since the calendar turned to 2020. A dramatic dip in offensive production has complicated matters for the team in recent outings. LSU shooters tallied a steady 86.1 points per game through their first 12 outings of the season, but have struggled to average 70.1 points during their current five-game swoon.

However, LSU’s top players have continued to play like it. Leading scorer Cameron Thomas has continued to hit the target. The freshman guard has averaged 25 points per game over his past three outings to lift his team-leading scoring pace to 22.3 points per game. Ja’Vonte Smart’s 29-point performance in a 76-71 loss to No. 10 Texas Tech marked a season-high for the junior guard, who also leads the squad in assists and steals.

Inconsistent Bulldogs Seek To Rewrite Narratives

The Bulldogs are also looking for answers as they return home looking to record consecutive SU wins for the first time in nine games. While last weekend’s victory in South Carolina as 2.5-point underdogs was welcome, consistency has emerged as a real problem for Mississippi State since conference play got underway.

Overall, the Bulldogs have fallen to defeat in five of their past eight outings, including a 2-5 run in conference play. The team has been badly outplayed during their current slide, scoring 55 or fewer points in four of the past five losses. That has helped sustain sports bettors taking the UNDER in totals betting, which has paid out in three of their past five games.

Bulldogs Remain Reliable Bet

While the Bulldogs have remained a reliable bet during their current shaky stretch, covering in five of seven contests, they face a huge challenge to end a 1-3 run against LSU. While Mississippi State has been held to fewer than 60 points in two of their past four dates with the Tigers,  the team has remained steady on home hardwood, posting SU wins in four of their past five visits from LSU,  while averaging 81.6 points per game during that stretch.

The Bulldogs have also covered in seven of 11 dates with LSU, but dropped a 92-88 decision to the Tigers as 3-point chalk in LSU’s last visit, back in February 2019.

With both these teams struggling look for Wednesday’s contest to be a low-scoring affair. That is in line with the trend favoring the UNDER, which has prevailed four of five clashes between these conference rivals. And with LSU struggling to run up the score on the road, opportunity knocks for the Bulldogs to rewrite their recent losing narrative against the Tigers.

The Picks: Bulldogs -2 (-110); UNDER 145.5 (-110)
