Maryland Pulls Out Win

Maryland scored the game’s final six points over the final 1:43 to beat Purdue. That ended a stretch in which the Terrapins played six of seven games against ranked teams and went 4-3.

Junior guard Eric Ayala made three free throws in the final minute, including two with three seconds left that gave Maryland the win.

Ayala finished with 16 points after scoring a season-low four in the Terrapins’ previous game, a loss to Wisconsin.

Junior guard Aaron Wiggins led Maryland with 18 points and 11 rebounds. It was his second double-double in the last three games and third of the season.

Senior guard Darryl Morsell finished with 11 points and made a 3-point field goal during Maryland’s late-game rally. The Terrapins were eight of 13 (61.5%) from long range in the second half after going one for 12 (8.3%) in the first 20 minutes.

Ayala is averaging a team-high 13.8 points a game while Wiggins is averaging 12.8 points and 5.4 rebounds,, including 15.9 points over the last eight games. Sophomore forward Donta Scott has averages of 12.7 points and 6.6 rebounds while shooting 53.0% from the floor and 45.7% on 3-pointers.

PSU Can’t Repeat

After playing Wisconsin tough for a half, Penn State missed its chance to win back-to-back games against the Badgers.

Penn State trailed just 33-31 at halftime. However, Wisconsin started the second half on a 15-2 run to extend its lead to 48-33 and the Nittany Lions never got within 13 points the rest of the way.

Junior guard Myreon Jones had a team-high 14 points. Jones’ season average of 15.6 points leads the team and he has scored in double figures in 13 of 14 games.

Senior forward John Harrar was the only other Penn State player to reach double digits in scoring , finishing with 10 points. He has had 10 or more points in three straight games after reaching that mark just three times in the first 11 games.

Harrar is the Nittany Lions’ leading rebounder at 8.1 a game and his 16.3 offensive rebounding percentage is ninth in the nation.

Junior guard Izaiah Brockington (14.7) and sophomore forward Seth Lundy (12.4) also have double-digit scoring averages. Brockington was held to eight points by Wisconsin, however, and Lundy finished with six.

Penn State shot just 38.6% in registering its lowest point total of the season. The Nittany Lions also went 6 for 24 (25.0%) beyond the arc and had 15 turnovers.

Revenge for Terps?

This is the first of two meetings between the schools this season.

In 2019-20, Penn State beat Maryland 76-69 at home as a two-point favorite. Jones scored 14 points and dished out six assists for the Nittany Lions. Ayala had 15 points for Maryland, which was ranked #4 at the time.

Maryland will be looking for revenge in this matchup. Coincidentally, the spread is the same as last season’s game.

Despite laying an egg in the second half in Madison on Tuesday, look for Penn State to bounce back on its home floor.

Pick: Penn State -2.5 (-104)
