Canisius will try to regain the momentum it had before a long COVID-19 pause when it hosts Quinnipiac at 2:00 p.m. ET Tuesday in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game at the Koessler Athletic Center in Buffalo.

Canisius (4-9/0-2 MAAC/4-3 home) will be playing for the first time since Dec. 22 when it beat visiting Florida Gulf Coast 97-90 in overtime. That gave the Golden Griffins their second straight win following a five-game losing streak.

Quinnipiac (7-5/2-2 MAAC/2-3 road) had its four-game winning streak snapped Sunday with a 76-66 loss at Niagara. The Bobcats are slight favorites in the second game of their Western New York swing that can be seen on ESPN3.

Quinnipiac Outlook

Quinnipiac has an interesting story in senior forward Kevin Marfo, who is sixth in the nation in rebounds with an average of 11.1 a game.

Marfo led the nation in boards two seasons ago for Quinnipiac. He then transferred to Texas A&M for the 2020-21 season but decided to return to the Bobcats for his final season of eligibility.

Marfo is having a fine all-round season as he is also averaging 9.8 points and 4.2 assists. He pulled down 12 rebounds against Niagara on Sunday, his eighth game of the season in double digits.

Again showing his playmaking abilities, Marfo had five assists. However, he also had six of Quinnipiac’s 18 turnovers.

Sophomore guard Dezi Jones scored a season-high 24 points, giving him back-to-back 20-point games. The surge has pushed Jones’ scoring average to 10.8.

Junior guard Matt Balanc is Quinnipiac’s top scorer at 16.0 points a game. He had 14 points and five rebounds against Niagara.

The Bobcats led 27-23 at halftime but were outscored 53-39 over the final 20 minutes.

Canisius Outlook

The most impressive part of Canisius’ win over Florida Gulf Coast three days before Christmas was it was missing leading scorer Malek Green. The senior forward has season averages of 16.5 points and 7.4 rebounds after winning MAAC Sixth Man of the Year honors last season.

Senior forward Scott Hitchon led Canisius with a season-high 28 points and had 11 rebounds for his first double-double of 2021-22. Hitchon made 6 of 8 three-point attempts and his big game seemingly came out of nowhere as it marked just the third time all season he scored in double figures.

The Golden Griffins also got a big contribution from senior guard Jordan Henderson, who finished with 19 points and seven assists. He has scored 14 points total in the previous three games.

Freshman guard Xzavier Long added 16 points and senior guard Ahamadou Fofana contributed 13 points, six assists and three steals while junior guard Armon Harried chipped in with 10 points.

Harried is scoring 12.2 points a game and has been in double figures in five of the last six games.

Canisius led 40-27 at halftime but needed a three-pointer by junior guard Akrum Ahemed with four seconds left in regulation to force overtime after allowing 54 second-half points. The Golden Griffins then scored the first eight points of the extra session to take control.

Canisius shot 43.3% (13 of 30 from beyond the arc and forced 20 turnovers.

Quinnipiac vs Canisius Prediction

This is the teams’ first meeting of 2021-22 after Canisius swept a two-game road series last February. The Golden Griffins won the second game 89-70 with Henderson scoring 13 points and pulling down eight rebounds.
