Sacred Heart Pioneers Betting Analysis

After suffering a 91-66 beatdown to Pittsburgh on the weekend, the Pioneers likely can’t wait to get back on the court to put their previous game behind them. That loss to the Panthers was their worst margin of defeat since losing 88-50 to Rutgers in the season opener.

The Pioneers are hoping to improve on last season’s 10-20 record. In November, Sacred Heart showed glimpses that they might be a team to reckon with in the Northeast Conference this year. A 5-3 record last month already got them halfway to last year’s overall win total, but December hasn’t been as kind, as they’ve opened this month with three straight losses.

Where does this squad excel? They play a fast pace, with an adjusted tempo of 72.3 which ranks 28th in the nation according to KenPom. This from a team that’s ranked 297th overall amongst Division I teams in the KenPom ratings.

They get a ton of possessions, but with an effective field goal percentage of 46.1, it doesn’t lead to as many buckets as they’d like. It also doesn’t help that the Pioneers shoot a brutal 28.9% from beyond the arc.

Forward Nico Galette leads the way on offense for Sacred Heart. The 6’6 junior is averaging 15.8 points and 6.8 rebounds per game through 11 games.

Stony Brook Betting Outlook

As number 344 overall in the KenPom college basketball ratings, Stony Brook are currently the worst ranked team in the Colonial Athletic Association. They are amongst the lowest ranked teams in the nation in both adjusted defensive and offensive efficiency.

2022-23 KenPom College Basketball Rankings

Team Rank Record Adjusted Offensive Efficiency Adjusted Defensive Efficiency
Sacred Heart Pioneers 296th 5-6 97.5 (284th) 108.3 (297th)
Stony Brook Seawolves 344th 2-7 94.9 (324th) 111 (339th)

Last season, Stony Brook defeated Sacred Heart 75-72 in their only meeting. The Seawolves are just 1-4 against the spread in their last six games. They’re also 4-1 hitting the under in their last six contests.

Tyler Stephenson-Moore paces the Seawolves in points per contest (15.3), and also averages 6.8 rebounds and 1.2 assists. At the other end, he posts 0.9 steals and 0.0 blocked shots. Frankie Policelli leads his squad in rebounds per game (8.8), and also averages 10.8 points and 2.2 assists.

Sacred Heart vs Stony Brook Pick & Prediction

Stony Brook are home underdogs partly because they haven’t beaten a Division I opponent yet this season and really haven’t shown they can.

The 63.4 points per game the Seawolves average are 11.1 fewer points than the Pioneers allow (74.5). When Sacred Heart allows fewer than 63.4 points, it is 3-0 against the spread and 3-1 overall. What this all means is that if we based this game on a law of averages, Sacred Heart is a pretty solid pick.

For Sacred Heart this season, you have to take the little wins before dreaming of the day you can become a contender in the odds to win the NCAA tournament. They have proven to be better than the Seawolves this year, so take the chalk and lay the points in the Sacred Heart vs Stony Brook college basketball odds.

Pick: Sacred Heart Pioneers -2.5 (-104)
