Southern Jaguars Betting Analysis

First round matchups went down all over the country last week, but the rest of the event will take place in Niceville culminating with the championship round over the weekend.

Southern pulled out a 74-66 victory over Cal in Berkeley last week, becoming the fourth SWAC team to beat a Pac-12 foe this season. The win was the Jaguars first of the season and their first ever against a Pac-12 program. They opened the season with defeats to UNLV, Arizona and St. Marys, three top-85 teams, two of which rank inside the top-25.

The Golden Bears were a clear step down in competition, ranking 230th overall, and the Greyhounds check in ranked 55 spots worse.

Southern was clearly outmatched in their first three contests, but looked quite strong against Cal. They shot 49% from the field and 52.2% from three, led by the 18 points of Brion Whitley. The senior guard was 4 of 8 from behind the arc, and was one of three Jags to score in double-figures.

Southern held the Golden Bears to 43% from the field, and forced 20 turnovers. They grade out slightly better on defense than offense per KenPom’s efficiency metrics, and should have no problem containing the Greyhounds who are one of the least efficient offenses in the country.

Loyola Maryland Betting Analysis

Loyola MD’s offense hit rock bottom in their last outing, scoring just 41 points in a 31 point loss to Clemson. The team shot 29% from the field and hit just 6 of 24 threes. They turned the ball over 18 times, resulting in 16 Tigers points, and had no answer at the defensive end. The Greyhounds enter play ranked 329th in raw offensive efficiency, and 299th in shooting percentage.

The Greyhounds yielded a 48% field goal percentage to Clemson, and nine offensive boards. They were outrebounded 41-27, and their play on defense and on the glass has been an issue all year. They rank 309th in defensive rebounding and 293rd in raw defensive efficiency.

Loyola MD is 2-3 to start the season, beating D-II Washington College and 259th ranked Brown. They’ve played three teams ranked inside the top-100, losing by a combined 62 points.

Southern vs Loyola Maryland Prediction

3 points simply isn’t enough in this matchup. The Greyhounds haven’t shown a pulse against anyone that’s remotely competitive this season, and while not elite, Southern is a veteran laden, more talented program.

Each of the Jags top-11 rotational players are upperclassmen, with four of their top-five being seniors. They’ve faced the more challenging schedule so far, and should be able to grind out a low scoring victory in this matchup to propel them into the next round.

Pick: Southern Jaguars -3 (-110)
