Two of the three powers in the Sun Belt Conference clash on Tuesday, as the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns play host to the Appalachian State Mountaineers. The Mountaineers (4-1) can make their claim to the conference title by winning this game and taking their October 20th meeting with Coastal Carolina.

Appalachian State holds an 8-1 all-time record in the series with Louisiana (4-1). However, Louisiana were 20-14 winners over the Mountaineers in last year’s game.

Still, it’s Appalachian State that’s being established as the 4.5-favorites in this game. The Mountaineers are 3-0 straight up all-time at Louisiana.

Mountaineers Are Climbing

With a reputation as a giant killer, Appalachian State came close to felling the Miami Hurricanes. Miami hung on for a 25-23 home-field victory. Since that loss, the Mountaineers are 3-0. They’ve won these games by a combined 64 points.

A potent, balanced offense is keying Appalachian State’s success. The Mountaineers are #2 in the Sun Belt in scoring offense, averaging 35.2 points per game. They are also #2 in total offense (481.8 ypg). They’re compiling 6.5 yards gained with each play.

Appalachian State pounds opponents. The Mountaineeers are #4 in the conference in rushing, gaining 197.2 yards per game on the ground. With 511 yards, running back Nate Noel is well on pace to give the Mountaineers a 1,000-yard rusher for the 10th successive season. Quarterback Chase Brice is third in the Sun Belt Conference in passing. He’s averaging 284.2 yards per game with eight touchdown passes.

In scoring defense, Appalachian State is #4. The Mountaineers are allowing just 20.0 points per game.

Louisiana’s Loose Defense

Will the Ragin’ Cajuns be able to stifle the powerful Appalachian State run game? Louisiana’s track record at stopping the run this season is suggesting that no will be the answer to this question.

The Ragin’ Cajuns are eighth in the Sun Belt at defending the run. Louisiana is allowing 171.2 yards per game on the ground.  They are #4 at defending the pass (236 YPG).

Louisiana is fifth in passing offense (229 YPG). QB Levi Lewis is an efficient passer (140.8 passer rating). He’s only been picked off once and is completing 63.5% of his passes.

The Ragin’ Cajuns rely on the run game to move the ball. They are fourth in the conference in rushing (213 YPG). Four different players have gained over 100 yards this season, including Lewis.

Trend Spotting

Each of the last five games in this series have been decided by 11 points or less. Louisiana is 4-0 since a season-opening 38-18 loss to the Texas Longhorns.

While the Mountaineers are proving to be a solid straight up play (6-1 overall, 11-3 in their last 14 road games), they are found to be lacking in terms of spread betting. Appalachian State are just 6-12 against the spread over the last 18 games.

The Mountaineers are a stellar over play, however.  Five of their last seven games and four of their past five conference games have gone over.

Louisiana tends to lean toward the under. The Ragin’ Cajuns have gone under in four of their past five games overall, four of the last five against the Mountaineers and eight of their last nine home games. They are 1-5 ATS in their last six games.

  • Pick: Appalachian State -4.5 (-110).
