Lawrence Test Positive For Covid-19

Heisman Trophy favorite Trevor Lawrence is out for Saturday’s game against Boston College after Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney announced Thursday evening that his senior QB tested positive for COVID-19. Swinney added that Lawrence is  “doing well with mild symptoms”.

ACC rules state that Lawrence must isolate for at least 10 days before returning to practice, assuming he’s no longer showing symptoms.

This is a massive development for both the ACC conference and college football as a whole. Lawrence has never missed a start for the Tigers since he became the team’s starting QB in September 2018. He was the clear Heisman front-runner after eight weeks of the 2020 season, throwing for 1,833 passing yards and 17 touchdowns with just two interceptions through six games.

Tigers Still Heavily Favored In Week 9

Lawrence being out for Clemson on Saturday meant that oddsmakers have dropped the team’s line from 32.5 to 24. The Tigers have won nine straight games against the Eagles and dominated in all areas during a 59-7 victory last season.

Boston College is 4-2 on the season and finally got their run game going  last week in a victory over Georgia Tech. Losing Lawrence doesn’t change the fact that Clemson has an elite top-10 defense that has limited the Eagles to just a single touchdown in all three of their last meetings.

Aside from the Tigers’ stout defense, another reason the line hasn’t change drastically is due to the talent of Clemson’s backup QB. Five-star freshman D.J. Uiagalelei will get the start against Boston College and has been impressive in limited action. The 6-5, 245-pound QB was lethally accurate in high school and has completed 12-of-19 passes for 102 yards this season with the Tigers.

Verdict On Lawrence’s Positive Test

Clemson is still going to beat Boston College without Lawrence, but this news has a bigger impact on the team’s upcoming clash with Notre Dame on Nov. 7. The Fighting Irish are undefeated through five games and are expected to be the Tigers’ biggest test this season.

Swinney announced the news on Thursday evening, but it’s been reported that Lawrence received his test on Wednesday. It appears likely that he’ll be eligible for the big game as long as his recovery goes well and there are no further complications.

Clemson is still loaded on offense with star running back Travis Etienne and a deep receiving core led by Amari Rodgers. Boston College has been getting slammed by the public since this news broke, but there could be value betting Clemson to cover when you look at Uiagalelei’s potential and how Clemson’s defense has dominated the Eagles’ offense in the past.
