BYU Gets A Breather

After a solid two-touchdown win against Wyoming last week, BYU gets a bit of a breather this week. The Cougars bounced back as Oregon laid 41 on them up in Oregon the week before. Against the Cowboys, BYU piled up 38 yards and looked more like the offense we are used to seeing under Kalani Sitake.

However, the Cougars are quite banged up with injuries.

The best news for BYU is that Utah State has been awful after a more solid season in 2021. Also, the Cougars are at home and this year, the Aggies have been outscored by nearly 21 points a game overall. It is a bit funny that the spread is right around 24. That might or might not change. Gunner Romney and Chase Roberts expect to be back for Thursday. Now, Puka Nacua, another wide receiver, is still questionable.

Also, it appears that Max Tooley, Gabe Summers, Earl Tuitoi-Mariner, and Kingsley Suamataia will all return by Thursday. If these players play as expected, that is great news for BYU and bettors alike. Again, Jaren Hall threw for four touchdowns and more than 300 yards last week.

On offense, it would be great to get back Puka Nacua back. The wide receiver has NFL first-round talent. Yes, Romney and the other wide receivers help but it is not quite the same. However, the priority remains that Nacua is ready for Notre Dame and Arkansas which loom ahead for the Cougars.

The defense may have an easier time with Utah State, who average a mere 15.5 points per game and could pressure QB Logan Bonner into a few mistakes (eight interceptions, several fumbles).

Utah State Struggling A Bit

Head coach Blake Anderson is seeing his team struggle a good deal. They cannot score and are getting scored upon quite a bit. They rank 123rd among all FBS teams in points for and 117th in points against. That is a recipe for disaster. The schedule does not get much easier for Utah State as they play Air Force next then Colorado State and Wyoming on the road.

The Aggies must do better when it comes to holding on to the ball. The eight interceptions from Logan Bonner’s arm is one thing, but it seems that fumbles just keep happening. Only one was lost last week, but six turnovers overall is disastrous.

Can Utah State cut down on the turnovers on the road? This problem just keeps recurring. Unfortunately, it does not seem like Anderson, the coaching staff, or the players have found a solution.

Utah State’s projected NCAAF win total of 7.5 is too high. That under looks better each day.
