Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler had an impressive debut which caused a swift reaction from the oddsmakers. He was sitting at +900 a little more than three weeks ago and he’s now listed at +400. Let’s take a look into his game and see if there’s still value to be had in a wager.

Impressive Debut Came Against Weak Competition

The stats from Rattler’s first start are undeniably impressive. He completed 14 of 17 passes for 290 yards and four touchdowns. More impressive than the final numbers is the fact he tallied them all playing only one half of football.

Oklahoma was handing such a thorough beating to Missouri State that his services were no longer needed after halftime. How much can be read into a great performance against an FBS opponent? Quite a bit actually. It was Rattler’s first start at the collegiate level and seeing he could handle the pressure was important.

It didn’t take him long to settle in either as you can see from finishing with only three incompletions. He’s accurate and poised, those things will play against any opponent.

While it’s tough to project whether he’ll join Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray as recent Heisman Trophy winners from Oklahoma, the shift in the odds makes sense. The lottery ticket-like odds may not be available but there is still plenty of value at +400 considering he’s likely to be in the mix all season, just as the OU starting quarterback is every year under head coach Lincoln Riley.

Consider Betting Oklahoma State RB Chuba Hubbard as Well

If you’re looking for a player farther down the board to sprinkle some money on, consider Oklahoma State star Chuba Hubbard. He has a great chance to be the first running back to win the Heisman Trophy since Alabama’s Derrick Henry back in 2015. Hubbard ran for 2,094 yards and 21 touchdowns last year before surprising all of college football and deciding to come back for his senior season.

If you didn’t bet on Rattler three weeks ago, allow that to be your lesson. You don’t need to see a contender beat up on an inferior opponent before making your wager. Hubbard and the Cowboys open their season against Tulsa on Saturday.

Get your money in before he racks up huge numbers and ends up all over SportsCenter. When it comes to futures bets in college football, the waiting game rarely pays off.
