The Maryland Terrapins (6-6) and Virginia Tech Hokies (6-6) both want to end their season above .500 as they face each other on Wednesday afternoon. Virginia Tech finished the ACC conference season with a 4-4 record while Maryland went just 3-6 in the Big Ten.

Virginia has lost three of their last four matchups against Maryland. Their last clash came in 2013.

Virginia Tech is playing a bit better of late winning three of their last five games including a win over their rival Virginia. Even with their record of late (2-6 last eight games), Maryland is a 3.5 point favorite on a neutral site. Also, the Maryland Terrapins are carrying an amazing 87% of the betting money on the moneyline but just 17% ATS. The Hokies are 7-5 against the spread this season as they face off against Maryland on Wednesday afternoon.

Virginia Tech Seeks Good Close to Chaotic Season

The Virginia Tech Hokies are technically on their third coach of the season as 2021 comes to a close. After Justin Fuente was let go and J.C. Price was given the interim tag, Brent Pry was named coach on November 30th. Pry was once a graduate assistant for Frank Beemer in the late 90’s and this season was Penn State’s defensive coordinator.  The one solid thing for the Hokies in 2021 has been their defense.

With a pretty good defense (39th in points against), Virginia Tech has something to work with here. In the meantime, this is still J.C. Price’s team for the bowl game.

The defensive line had mostly been stout over this final stretch of the season. That Miami game was a bit of a problem but Price does have some things to work with defensively and offensively as well. In scoring differential, Virginia Tech scored 1.9 points per game more than they allowed which ranked near the top 50.

Can Maryland Remember September?

Will Maryland’s win over Rutgers be a catalyst? The Terrapins could not win games in October and November as they lost six of their final eight games. After winning four straight games in September, which included a highlight triumph over West Virginia, Maryland tumbled getting blown out in three consecutive contests.

Now, those blowouts pushed Maryland’s defensive totals outside the top-100 in most rankings. They were 105th in points allowed with 32.4 points per game yielded. That was 5.2 points more than they generated offensively (27.2 – 77th overall). The Terrapins were fortunate that Rutgers laid an egg in the final game so they could go bowling. Maryland’s defense is quite porous against the run giving up nearly 200 yards per game over the second half of the season.

Never mind injuries, Maryland again has to play better defensively against teams a step upward competition-wise. That being said, this is quite an opportunity.

Maryland vs Virginia Tech Betting Trends and Pick

As we mentioned previously, there is little immediate history between these two teams. The last time they played against each other was in 2013.

The number that still surprises is that Virginia Tech can score points. It comes down to early execution. They have to get off to a good start. Malachi Thomas finally gets his big chance with the first team that averages 5.7 yards per carry and nearly 191 yards a contest rushing.

Virginia Tech will cover and this is a game that the Hokies can win straight up. The spread is solid enough to take the Hokies as they face a Maryland team that responds poorly to adversity.

  • Picks: Virginia Tech +3.5 (-115), Virginia Tech ML (+140)
