  • Sooners seek third CFP appearance in last five years
  • Clemson finished with a perfect 15-0 record last season
  • Oregon’s chances to clinch a playoff berth move to +425

After reaching the College Football Playoff semifinals the last two years, will the Oklahoma Sooners finally get over the hump and win a championship in 2019-20?

Among the top contenders, oddsmakers aren’t giving the Sooners much of a shot to win the championship at +1400. Sportsbooks have enticing prop futures on which teams will make the playoffs, with the Sooners pegged at +115 underdogs to earn a four-team berth — something other programs such as Alabama, Clemson, Georgia and Ohio State will also be vying for.

Even though the Sooners have locked up a spot in the playoffs over the last two seasons while also leading the country in offensive numbers during that process, sportsbooks’ odds still consider the Sooners to be less than a 50/50 shot to reach the playoffs for a third consecutive year.

But at +115, it’s worth backing Oklahoma to return to the final four.

Sooners Big 12 beasts

Kyler Murray quarterbacked the 2018-19 Sooners to a Big 12 Conference title with an 8-1 record. Murray’s masterful Heisman-winning season saw the QB help the Sooners lead the country in offense with 7,984 total yards and 570 yards per game. Oklahoma’s 677 total points for ranked second only behind Oklahoma.

The challenge to maintain those stats becomes greater with Alabama transfer Jalen Hurts, who will take over the starting quarterback role with the Sooners. Hurts is an undeniable talent and has weapons at his disposal that should help the Sooners get back to college football’s four-team playoff.

Odds that defending champions Clemson return to the four-team playoff got slightly better as sportsbooks are offering a -300 line that clinch a spot. Clemson finished with an unblemished 15-0 overall record a season ago to defeat the Crimson Tide in the final.

Clemson had one of the best defenses in college football a year ago and it’s expected that will once again carry over to the upcoming season. You may not be getting much value by taking Clemson to reach the playoffs, but it’s highly unlikely they’ll miss at +240. The Tigers have reached the final three times and have won the championship twice since college football moved to its current playoff format in 2014.

Ducks hunting for playoffs

Sportsbooks’ latest prop odds show that Oregon’s chances of clinching a spot in the four-team playoff slightly improved. The line on the Duck’s chances moved from +500 to +425, making it even more enticing to put your money on Oregon.

If there was a season to believe Oregon could make a serious run at a playoff spot, now is the time. The Ducks have senior QB Justin Hebert as well as all five offensive line starters returning to the fold.

The Ducks finished 9-4 overall but 5-4 within the Pac-12 last season. Look for huge improvements from the Ducks heading into the 2019-20 college football season.
