Who will be the first college football coach to get the gate?

The list of candidates worthy of a pink slip is not a short one. This prop bet allows you to pick from the pile without fear of a dark horse candidate ruining the fun. The wager only includes the coaches listed below.

You’re unlikely to find any of the teams atop the National Championship odds but that doesn’t mean they entered the season without expectations. Texas, USC, and Auburn, in particular, had high hopes entering the year. Who’s the best bet on the board? Two stand out above the rest.

Texas Boosters Unhappy With Tom Herman

When Tom Herman left Ohio State to take the head coaching job at Texas many considered it a home run hire. Unfortunately, for the passionate fan base in Austin, it’s been anything but.

The Longhorns started the season 2-0 for the first time under Herman only to lose back-to-back games to fall out of the top 25. Herman is now sporting a 27-17 record which isn’t good enough when you’re leading a top tier program like Texas. It’s also not good enough when you’re making $5.2-million per year.

Herman’s biggest issue may be his inability to beat Oklahoma. Last week the Longhorns fell in four overtimes to the Sooners to run his record to 1-4 in the rivalry game. Remember Charlie Strong? He was fired by Texas for winning only once in three tries against Oklahoma. Herman will need an incredible effort to keep his job at the end of the season and could lose it before that if the program suffers any other embarrassing defeats. Next up are the Baylor Bears on October 24th.

Derek Mason On Thin Ice At Vanderbilt

Vanderbilt has been a doormat in the SEC for Derek Mason’s entire tenure at the school. He took over the program in 2014 and recorded exactly zero seasons of .500 football. His overall record is 27-50 and seems to be getting worse by the week.

Last season the Commodores went 3-9 which was tied for the worst record put up in a season coached by Mason. This year? They opened with three straight losses and appear to have somehow taken a step backward.

The lone silver lining for Mason is this week’s postponed game. Vanderbilt won’t play Missouri this week because of a Covid-19 outbreak and will be off until October 31st when they face Ole Miss. The program will put up more losses this season and it seems the question is more when will they fire Mason as opposed to if they will fire Mason.

Bet On Herman To Be First Coach Fired

Weighing all of the facts, Herman is the best value bet on the board. Mason has been unsuccessful for 6 years at Vanderbilt so trying to pinpoint when the university will cut bait is almost impossible.

Herman, on the other hand, is leading a team with high expectations and a group of boosters that tends to air on the side of firing the coach when something doesn’t seem right. Take Herman at +300 and hope the Texas losing streak doesn’t stop at two games.

Best Bet: Tom Herman (+300)
