Minnesota Very Different Team in 2020

Minnesota burst onto the scene in 2019 with a 9-0 record, the program’s best since 1904. By season’s end head coach, P.J. Fleck had a share of the Big Ten Coach of the Year. Now? Things are very different.

The Golden Gophers have suffered a series of embarrassing losses including a 25-point defeat to the Michigan Wolverines. A trendy pick to make noise in the Big Ten after their big season last year, calling the start to the season anything other than a disappointment would be an understatement.

Tanner Morgan is one of the big reasons for Minnesota’s change in fortune. Last year he completed 66% of his passes while throwing for 30 touchdowns and only seven interceptions. This season he’s only completing 57.5% of his throws and has four touchdowns and four picks. It’s been a stunning regression for the junior quarterback. If the Golden Gophers are going to turn their season around, they’ll need a bigger contribution from their star player.

Purdue Surviving Without WR Rondale Moore

The Rondale Moore saga is a confusing one, to say the least. He opted out of the season, only to opt back in. Still, he hasn’t made his season debut due to, well, it depends on who you ask. There have been reports of a lower-body injury, but most recently he was ruled out of a game, and the university declared “no further information is available”.

While Minnesota wishes for more production from their star, Purdue just wants to get theirs on the field. There is no indication at this time he’ll be suiting up for this game.

Good news for the Boilermakers, David Bell has stepped into the number one wide receiver role in Moore’s absence and been absolutely exceptional. Before reading these stats, remember Purdue has played only three games so far this season. Bell has totaled 31 receptions for 321 yards and four touchdowns. If you are in a college football fantasy football league that has PPR, Bell is a dream. If you’re not, just be thankful you can bet on Purdue with him producing such gaudy offensive numbers.

Purdue lost their only game of the season last week to ranked Northwestern. With wins over Iowa and Illinois, it’s reasonable to think they turn things around before one loss becomes a losing streak.
