Looking solely at the scoreboard, the San Diego State Aztecs (6-4, 4-6 ATS) are clearly dominating the New Mexico Lobos (2-8, 3-6-1 ATS). However, take a similar glance at the rivalry from a betting standpoint and it’s the Lobos who are the dominant club.

San Diego State is 8-0 straight up in the past eight games between the two schools. New Mexico hasn’t got the better of the Aztecs in a game since 2008.

Factor in the point spread and the matchup paints a much different picture. New Mexico is 12-4 against the spread in the past 16 games facing San Diego State.

Nonetheless, it’s the Aztecs who are set as 14.5-point road favorites over the Lobos in the latest renewal of this rivalry. San Diego State is 1-6 ATS in the past seven games at New Mexico.

Aztecs vs Lobos Betting Trends

The public betting splits are showing that both spread and moneyline bettors are embracing the Aztecs. San Diego State is garnering 89% of spread handle and 55% of spread bets. There’s also 65% of moneyline handle and 92% of moneyline bets backing San Diego State.

The over is getting the action on the total. It’s grabbing 78% of total handle and 82% of total betting. The under was the winning play in six of the last eight games between these two schools.

Another Low Blow For Lobos

Drubbed 35-3 by the Air Force Falcons, New Mexico took it on the chin yet again. Over the past four weeks, the Lobos have been outscored 124-45 in four losses. New Mexico hasn’t managed to score more than 14 points in any of those games.

New Mexico is 129th in the 131-school FBS in scoring offense. The Lobos are putting up 14.7 points per game. They’ve been held to 10 points or less in four games this season. Only Massachusetts and Colorado (15 each) have scored fewer TDs than the 16 times that New Mexico has visited the end zone.

The Lobos are 130th in passing efficiency (95.14). They’ve thrown for an NCAA-low three TD passes. New Mexico is 127th in passing yardage per game (108.5) and 120th in completion percentage (53.7). As well, the Lobos are 129th in the nation in first downs gained (142) and 125th in yards per completion (9.86).

In last week’s loss to Air Force, New Mexico QB Justin Holaday was sacked five times. The Lobos have allowed 3.60 sacks per game. That’s 124th in the NCAA.

Mayden Getting It Done For San Diego State

Last week’s 43-27 win over San Jose State made the Aztecs bowl eligible. San Diego State quarterback Jalen Mayden was a double threat in the victory over the Spartans.

Mayden completed 77.3% of his passes (17-of-22). He tossed for three touchdowns against one interception. With his feet, Mayden rambled for a game-high 61 yards on 13 carries. The performance earned him Mountain West Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors.

Receiver Tyrell Shavers caught four passes for 111 yards and a TD.

San Diego State vs New Mexico Prediction

Certainly, New Mexico looks to be cannon fodder for San Diego State. The Lobos are 0-7 SU in their last seven games and 0-5 ATS in their last five games.

This is the eight time in the last nine games between the two schools that the Aztecs are the double-digit chalk. They are 1-6 ATS in that scenario over the past seven outcomes. That includes an 0-2 ATS slate at New Mexico.

Pick: New Mexico +14.5 (-110).
