The Red River Shootout is looking more like the Disappointment Bowl this season, as longtime rivals Oklahoma and No. 22 Texas get set to meet at 12 p.m. Saturday at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.

Oklahoma (1-2 overall, 0-2 Big 12) is favored by 2.5 points ,but has been upset in both its conference games since routing Missouri State in its opener. The losses have dropped the Sooners out of the AP Top 25.

Texas (2-1 overall, 1-1 Big 12) also nearly dropped from the rankings following a home loss to TCU last weekend.

Now the teams will try to turn their seasons around in one of the biggest rivalry games in college football. The game is annually played in the middle of the State Fair of Texas, but the event has been cancelled this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A Long History

This will be the 106^th meeting between the schools, dating to 1903, and Texas leads the all-time series 55-45-5.

Oklahoma has beaten the Longhorns each of the last two seasons and four times in the last five years. However, Texas has won against the spread in four of those games as the average margin of victory has been 6.2 points.

Oklahoma won 34-27 last season, but did not cover the 10.5-point spread.

Jalen Hurts threw three touchdown passes to CeeDee Lamb. Hurts threw for 235 yards and ran for another 131. Both are now in the NFL.

Oklahoma’s defense harassed Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger all day as it finished with nine sacks.

Ehlinger completed 26 of 38 passes for 210 yards but was held without a TD. He also had minus-9 yards rushing on 23 attempts.

Bad Kind of History

The Sooners were upset for the second week in a row last Saturday, falling 37-30 to Iowa State on the road as 7.5-point favorite. That came a week after 28-point underdog Kansas State stunned Oklahoma 38-35 in Norman.

It marks the first time Oklahoma has lost back-to-back regular-season games since 1999 when they fell to Notre Dame and Texas.

Defense has been a major problem for Oklahoma. The Sooners have given up 75 points and 817 total yards in their two losses.

Oklahoma blew a 21-point lead in the third quarter to Kansas State and an 11-point advantage in the second period against Iowa State.

While not quite under the standards of recent seasons under coach Lincoln Riley, Oklahoma is still scoring an average of 37.7 points a game.

Highly touted redshirt-freshman quarterback Spencer Rattler has thrown for 977 yards and 10 touchdowns, though he has been intercepted four times.

Longhorns Beat Themselves

After escaping with a 63-56 overtime win at Texas Tech as a 17.5-point favorite two weeks ago, Texas lost to TCU 33-31 as an 11-point favorite in Austin last Saturday.

The Longhorns were their own worst enemy in defeat. They allowed 455 total yards to the Horned Frogs, were penalized 12 times, and lost a fumble at the TCU 1-yard line on their final possession.

Ehlinger threw four touchdown passes to raise his season total to an FBS-best 14. However, his overall passing numbers were pedestrian as he completed 17 of 36 attempts for 236 yards and an interception.

The Ehlinger-led offense is averaging 51.0 points a game. The defense seems intent on trying to match that total.

Intriguing QB Matchup

Oklahoma opened as a 2.5-point favorite and that line has held steady.

This marks the first time since 1999 that neither team is ranked in the top 20 going into the Red River Shootout.

Part of what makes this matchup particularly intriguing is the veteran Ehlinger against the inexperienced Rattler at quarterback. This will be Ehlinger’s fifth game against Oklahoma as he also played as a true freshman before being redshirted.

With neither team carrying any momentum into the game, the veteran leadership of Ehlinger should make the difference.
