  • Washington dismantled BYU, 45-19, at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Week 4
  • USC took down #10 Utah 30-23, at home in Week 4
  • The Huskies are double-digit home favorites against the Trojans in Week 5 (Sat. Sept 28)

In what is shaping up to be one of the marquee games in Week 5 of the college football season, the #21 USC Trojans will go into Husky Stadium to take on the #17 Washington Huskies on Saturday afternoon (Sep. 28).

As of right now in the USC vs Washington odds the Huskies have opened as ten point favorites at home. This line can really depend on who is starting at quarterback for the Trojans.

Kedon Slovis’ status is still undetermined, however, Matt Fink made his case to start against Washington this week after his offensive outburst against Utah.

#21 USC at #17 Washington Odds

Team Spread Moneyline Total
USC +10 (-110) +290 O 59 (-115)
Washington -10 (-110) -350 U 59 (-105)

*Odds taken 09/23/19

The Trojans come into this one after a big upset over then-#10 Utah behind third-string quarterback Matt Fink. Kedon Slovis started the game but exited early in the first quarter after suffering a head injury. Jacob Eason and the Huskies put on an offensive clinic against BYU last week scoring 40+ and racking up 477 yards of total offense.

Is Fink The Real Deal?

After almost transferring to Illinois after being listed as the third-string quarterback, Matt Fink came in and dominated against a tough Utah defense. Fink finished with 351 passing yards, three touchdowns, and just one interception. USC’s running game was non-existent so there was a lot of pressure on Fink’s shoulders.

Fink had thrown just 18 passes in his career with USC before last Friday night. The junior quarterback lacks experience and reps but he looked extremely confident against Utah. On the other hand, true freshman quarterback Kedon Slovis has started just two games in his short college football career.

Slovis has thrown for 732 yards, five touchdowns, and four interceptions this season for USC.

Well Rounded Huskies

Jacob Eason has been almost perfect in 2019 thus far. The Georgia transfer has thrown for 1,063 yards, 10 touchdowns, and two interceptions, leading the Huskies to a 3-1 record. Eason struggled in Washington’s lone loss to California in Week 2 as he failed to throw a touchdown pass.

Washington’s defense has allowed just 18.3 points per game this year. The Huskies have not played the greatest offenses, but they have yet to allow a team to score more than 20 points against them. With an inexperienced quarterback coming into a hostile environment, the Huskies defense will be licking their chops.

Wait it Out

At this point, there is too much uncertainty to make a confident pick. The Trojans are ridden with injuries, however, their backup quarterbacks have filled in superbly. One thing to note, the Huskies beat a BYU team last week 45-19 that beat USC 30-27 the week before.

Washington is a more complete team than USC, which means I would lean Huskies -10. When USC names a confident starter, the line should drop to maybe 9.5-9.0, but re-evaluate when that time comes.

After Fink’s big performance last week, it is hard to think he won’t put up a fight before Washington pulls away. However, if Slovis somehow ends up starting, this game will be all Huskies. Regardless of who starts at quarterback for USC, Eason will be able to exploit a defense that has not held a team to under 20 points.
