No. 4 Ohio State (3-0) is an 18.5-point home favorite over Wisconsin in the Big Ten opener for both at 7:30 pm ET Saturday, September 24th on ABC. The teams last met in the 2019 Big Ten Championship game in Indianapolis, when the Buckeyes won 34-21 but did not cover the 16.5-point number.
Wisconsin (2-1) was 3-1 SU and ATS as a road underdog last season and never faced a spread of greater than 13 points. They are 6-3 SU and ATS in their last nine as road underdogs.

The point spread and the total were bet up slightly during the week after the Buckeyes opened as a 17.5-point favorites and the total started at 56.
Ohio State is 8-0 SU and 6-2 ATS in the last eight against Badgers and 11-1 SU, 9-3 ATS against them since 2007. The Buckeyes are 5-0 SU and ATS in the last five meetings in Columbus. Because the teams are in different Big Ten divisions, they have met only once in Ohio since 2013.
Ohio State Picks Up Steam
Buckeyes’ quarterback C.J. Stroud took a step up in the Heisman Trophy odds last week when he threw for 367 yards and five touchdowns in a 77-21 rout over Toledo.

Stroud has completed 72 percent of his passes this season and is ninth in NCAA Division I with 313 passing yards per game. His five touchdown passes against Toledo were one short of a career high, and the loss of back-to-back NFL first-round draft choices Garrett Wilson and Chris Olave has not seemed to matter.
Wideouts Emeka Egbuka and Marvin Harrison Jr. have stepped in to combine for 38 receptions, 666 yards and eight touchdowns. Harrison had 184 yards and three touchdowns against Arkansas State two weeks ago and followed that with six catches for 102 yards and a touchdown against Toledo.

Ohio State sophomore running back TreVeyon Henderson rushed for 178 yards and two touchdowns in wins over Notre Dame and Arkansas State, but he left the Toledo game with an undisclosed injury after four carries and did not return. He is expected to play.
The Buckeyes had 763 yards against Toledo, which is expected to contend in the Mid-American Conference, and leads Division I in total offense with 565 yards per game. They have become the favorite in the college football playoff odds.
Wisconsin Plays Its Game
Wisconsin’s identity under Paul Chryst does not change. The Wolverines’ game is built on beef and athleticism across both lines, a strong running game, and a game manager at quarterback.

Running back Braelon Allen — 6’2, 238 — is the latest in the Jonathan Taylor, Melvin Gordon, Montee Ball mold. Allen had 1,268 yards rushing as a true freshman in 2021 and has 332 yards and five touchdowns in wins over Illinois State and New Mexico State and a home loss to Washington State this year. He had three scores in the 66-7 victory last week.
Wisconsin quarterback Graham Mertz has improved his completion percentage to 71%, with six touchdowns against two interceptions this season.

Mertz has struggled in Big Ten play in his career, completing 60.5 percent of his throws with 16 touchdowns and 11 picks.
Wisconsin vs Ohio State Injuries
Ohio State preseason All-American wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba missed the Arkansas State game with a hamstring injury and had only two catches against Toledo, but he is expected to be full-go this week. Starting safeties Tanner McAlister and Josh Proctor did not play last week and are considered questionable with undisclosed injuries.
Wisconsin senior cornerback Alexander Smith will miss his fourth straight game because of a hamstring injury. Free safety Hunter Wohler also has been ruled out. Tanor Bortolini and Justin Clark are questionable because of undisclosed injuries.
Ohio State vs Wisconsin Prediction
Stroud vs Mertz gives Ohio State a giant edge at quarterback, always a good place to start. As the Buckeyes opened their offense a few years ago, they have developed a decided advantage in team speed over most of the Big Ten, and it has been especially noticeable against Wisconsin in recent years.
