  • The San Francisco 49ers are 3-point road favorites against the Dallas Cowboys
  • Neither team has been eliminated from postseason play, but each is on the brink
  • See odds, spreads and lines for this Week 15 matchup between the 49ers and the Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys, despite being tied for the worst record in the NFC at 4-9, remain mathematically alive in the NFC East, although it is an uphill climb. The Cowboys would need to win out to win the division, and they also would need to finish with a better record than current division leader Washington (6-7) if the two finish tied, as Washington won both meetings between the two this season.

They host the 5-8 San Francisco 49ers at At&T Stadium. The Niners have lost five of their last six, but the 49ers remain alive in a cluttered field of contenders vying for the last of seven NFC playoff spots. The 49ers have been decimated by injuries/COVID absences this season and again will be without tight end George Kittle and wide receiver Deebo Samuel.

This game was flexed out of the prime Sunday Night slot to make way for Cleveland-New York, and will be played in the early Sunday TV window on CBS.

Do Not Read Too Much Into Last Week

The Cowboys recorded their most lopsided victory of the season in quarterback Andy Dalton’s return to Cincinnati last week,  a 30-7 victory in which they gave up a season low in points after permitting 103 points in their previous three games.

The Bengals had a nine-minute edge in time of possession and out-gained Dallas by 30 yards, but lost  fumbles on their first three possessions, leading to 17 quick points. Cowboys’ linebacker Aldon Smith returned one fumble 78 yards for a touchdown.

The 49ers had a 344-193 edge in total yards in a 23-15 home loss to the Washington Football Team but hurt themselves with  three turnovers, two of which became touchdowns. Washington rookie of the year candidate Chase Young returned a fumble 47 yards for a touchdown in the final minute of the first half and Kamren Curl returned an interception 76 yards for a touchdown on the final play of the third quarter.

Top Rookie Wide Receivers meet

Dallas first-round draft pick CeeDee Lamb and San Francisco first-rounder  Brandon Aiyuk are among the top five among rookies in yards this season. The leaders entering Saturday’s games are Minnesota’s Justin Jefferson (1,078), Cincinnati’s Tee Higgins (778), Lamb (742), Pittsburgh’s Chase Claypool (664) and Aiyuk (660).

Aiyuk has 36 receptions for 481 and three touchdowns in his last five games, and his 10 catches (for 117 yards) tied Jerry Rice and running back Earl Cooper for the most in a game by an 49ers rookie. Aiyuk missed the first game of the season with a hamstring injury and missed two games in November while on the reserve/COVID list.

Aiyuk leads the 49ers in receiving yards and his six total touchdowns, including two on the ground. Lamb is second in Dallas to Amari Cooper (742), with five receiving scores.

Lamb was the 17th player taken in the 2020 draft, the third receiver selected behind Alabama teammates Henry Ruggs and Jerry Jeudy. Jalen Reagor and Justin Jefferson were taken before Aiyuk went at No. 25.

A Look At The Trends

Dallas is 3-10 ATS this season, including 1-5 at home, the worst record in the league. San Francisco is not much better, going at 5-8 ATS, but the 49ers have  played much better on the road, going 4-2 ATS and 2-0 as a road favorite.

The Cowboys are 1-0 as a home underdog this season, although they did not win the game. They covered the 14-point number in a 24-19 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Dallas is at the bottom of the league in several key statistics. The Cowboys are giving up a league-high 30.8 points a game. They also have allowed 2,115 rushing yards, a hefty 5.1 yard gain per tote, which are both league highs.

The Pick: 49ers -3 (113)
