  • Aaron Donald is favored by most sportsbooks to win his third straight NFL Defensive Player of the Year Award
  • The Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle has odds of +260
  • Some sportsbooks however have New England Patriots cornerback Stephone Gilmore as the favorite at +400, just ahead of Donald (+450)

Aaron Donald is on the move and the rest of the contenders for the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year Award should be making like blockers trying to stymie the Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle.

They need to be constantly keeping track of Donald.

Donald has moved into favored status in the NFL DPOY odds at +260. Some sportsbooks however, feel differently and have New England Patriots cornerback Stephone Gilmore as their +400 chalk.

2019 NFL Defensive Player of the Year Award Odds

Player (Team) Odds at Sportsbook 1 Odds at Sportsbook 2
Aaron Donald (Rams) +260 +450
Stephone Gilmore (Patriots) +450 +400
Nick Bosa (49ers) +600 +900
TJ Watt (Steelers) +900 +600

Odds taken on Dec. 11.

Across most sportsbooks, Donald owns top spot with average odds of +260. It’s the first time Donald has led since October 23.

Donald Has Stepped Up His Game

When the first NFL DPOY Award odds were unveiled in late July, Donald was unsurprisingly the +200 chalk to win. But much like the Rams, he was slow to launch when the season got underway.

Lately, he’s looked like . . . well, himself.

The Rams DT has recorded at least one sack in seven of the last eight games. He’s collected 10 sacks since Week 6.

In the first five games of the season, Donald posted just one sack.

He’s only seventh in the NFL in sacks with 11.0. However, Donald leads the league in tackles for loss, and he and Chicago’s Khalil Mack share top spot in the NFL with 28 hurries.

Only Pittsburgh’s TJ Watt (50) has more quarterback hits than Donald (49).

NFL DPOY Award Competition Fading

While Donald is ramping up his game down the stretch, those who’d vaulted past him in the odds are backing up.

San Francisco 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa maintains the inside track for NFL DROY but it’s harder to consider him a factor for DPOY.  Bosa posted seven sacks in his first seven games. He’s recorded one in the past five games.

Gilmore was already in tough. Secondary players don’t get as many chances to make plays as the front seven. The last cornerback to win the NFL DPOY Award was Charles Woodson of the Green Bay Packers in 2009.

Gilmore has one interception in the last six games after snaring three over the first seven.

History Will Be Made

Donald, JJ Watt of the Houston Texans (2014-15) and Lawrence Taylor of the New York Giants (1981-82) are the only back-to-back winners of NFL DPOY.

There’s never been a threepeat . . . until now.

Wager on Donald winning but play him where you can still get +450 odds.

Pick: Aaron Donald (+450).
