  • The New England Patriots defense has scored four touchdowns and has allowed just three.
  • Tom Brady has thrown an interception in three straight games.
  • The combined record of the Patriots opponents this season is 7-22.

The New England Patriots improved to 6-0 on Thursday as they took care of business against the injury-plagued New York Giants.

While the final score of 35-14 suggests a blowout, the game was far closer than the score indicates.

With their Super Bowl odds now sitting at +300, are they worth a bet at this point?

Patriots Beat Giants But Offense Struggles

The Patriots did end up winning comfortably on Thursday, but there were a number of concerns that came out of the game. On offense, we saw Tom Brady turn the ball over twice, including a brutal pick and strip-sack fumble that was returned for a touchdown.

In both cases, those plays would be game-changers against competent opponents and it nearly cost them against the Giants. New York was able to tie the game 14-14 and was actually in the contest far longer than they should’ve been given the talent discrepancy.

In terms of the running game, Sony Michel struggled once again, averaging just 2.9 yards-per-carry before his garbage time 26-yard run. The offensive line was a wreck as Brady was pressured all night and sacked three times by a Giants team that had just 10 sacks on the season.

On top of that, the team suffered some more injuries, including receiver Josh Gordon, who was forced to leave the game. Thursday produced a win for the Pats but the offense clearly has some issues.

Defense Continues to Shine

While the offense might have some concerns, the defense definitely does not. They scored again on Thursday, which means they’ve now scored four touchdowns on the year while they’ve only allowed three themselves.

They also finally gave up their first passing touchdown of the season, which is incredible when you consider that we’re in Week 6. Their secondary has now given up one touchdown, picked off 14 passes and allowed a meager 39.5 passer rating to opposing quarterbacks. They’re also giving up just 8.0 points per game.

Patriots Odds Were Never This Short Last Season

Taking a look back to the Super Bowl 53 odds from last season for contrast, the Patriots were never this short at any point in the regular season. A big reason for that is because they had competition for the top seed and remember, they started the year 1-2. Kansas City didn’t lose their second game of the year until Week 11.

The tables have turned this season as the Patriots are 6-0 and the Chiefs have already suffered a loss. They also have a cakewalk of a schedule as their next three opponents are the New York Jets (0-4), Cleveland Browns (2-3) and the Baltimore Ravens (3-2). They could be 9-0 when they hit their bye.

With games remaining against the Miami Dolphins, Cincinnati Bengals and Buffalo Bills (in New England), the Patriots look like they’ll have at least 12 wins. Their Super Bowl futures are tied to that No. 1 spot and right now, they have a clear path to it.

What’s the Best Bet?

I never like betting the favorite in this spot as I just don’t see a ton of value. There’s no question that the Patriots defense looks great but I have some long-term concerns about the offense. Brady has now thrown a pick in three straight weeks and the offense just isn’t great right now. We saw the Bills slow them down and the Giants did too.

The other thing to note is that the Patriots haven’t really played anyone. The combined record of their opponents this season is 7-22. Let’s just this team after they play the Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys and Kansas City Chiefs. Our perceptions could change.
