  • Chicago’s offense struggled in the opening game against Green Bay
  • The Bears’ Super Bowl 54 odds dropped after the 10-3 loss
  • Are the Bears now a value bet to hoist the Lombardi Trophy?

The Chicago Bears had a ton of promise entering this season. They have a Pro Bowler quarterback in Mitchell Trubisky and a rock-solid defense that features the likes of Khalil Mack and Akiem Hicks.

Yet, on opening night against the Green Bay Packers, the defense showed up, but their third-year QB did not.  After a disappointing 10-3 loss, Chicago’s Super Bowl 54 odds have dropped drastically.

Do the Bears Provide Any Value?

From what I saw from the Chicago Bears last night, I would not put them among the favorites to win the Super Bowl.

The offense struggled mightily. At one point, Trubisky had an open receiver in the endzone and did not see him. He was sacked two times, intercepted once, and did not throw a single touchdown. To make matters worse they were an awful 3/15 on third down, which prevented their offense from ever getting in a rhythm.

Bears head coach, Matt Nagy was frustrated with his offense only scoring three points.

“Three points is ridiculous … Obviously unacceptable,” Nagy said, adding ” I was proud of our defense. I thought they played their ass off tonight. Offensively, not good enough. And we’re going to fix it. Our guys know that. We have a locker room of high-character people. That’s why we bring these guys in because what they do is, they don’t point fingers. The defense doesn’t point fingers and say the offense should have played better. That’s not how we roll.”

Despite Nagy’s strong words about impending offensive improvement, there is little reason to believe he can improve things enough to make Chicago a true Super Bowl contender. This team finished 20th in Offensive DVOA last year.

The four conference championship teams (New England, Kansas City, New Orleans, and the LA Rams) were all in the top five. Those teams are better value at this stage as their offenses are proven commodities.

Will the Bears odds change?

I still expect the Bears to be a playoff team and have success this season. But until their offense starts to click, they will remain an outside contender in the Super Bowl 54 odds.

If last night showed anything it will take a bit for that to happen.

Before kickoff, the Bears were sporting +1400 odds in the Super Bowl futures. I suspect that is about where they will be at year’s end. So if you believe in the Bears actually being able to make a deep playoff run, this is likely the best price you’re going to get.
